Early detection and prevention, the only available cure for cancer- Gov’s wife.
The Wife of the Niger state Governor and founder Raise foundation, Dr. Amina Abubakar Sani Bello has said that early detection and prevention is the only available cure for cancer disease especially in the developing countries today.
Dr. Amina, a Consultant Gynaecologist, who started this yesterday while delivering a lecture titled “Early detection and timely management of cancer: panacea to graceful ageing” at the Federal University of Technology, Minna maintained that there is no single treatment available for cancer.
Describing cancer as the biggest causes of death globally, the Governor’s wife pointed out that late presentation of cancer cases, especially in the developing world is responsible for high death rate of cancer patients.
According to her “before they come to the hospital, they are already looking sick such that it will be difficult to perform any surgical operation on the patient”.
She identified ageing as one of the fundamental factors for the development of cancer and the global burden of cancer continues to increase largely because of the growth of the ageing world population in addition to cancer causing behaviors such as smoking and alcohol use.
Dr. Amina singled out tobacco smoking as the greatest avoidable factor for cancer mortality worldwide causing an estimated 22% of all cancer death globally annually.
She suggested among other things, the elimination of tobacco smoking which accounts for about 70% of all lung cancer, unhealthy lifestyle of the people in third world countries and above all the reduction or elimination of alcohol as some of the best prevention strategies for cancer control.
Earlier the vice chancellor, Professor Musbau Akanji in his welcome address described the lecture as timely, saying that the University has lost some of its staff to the dreaded cancer disease in recent time
