Driver sentenced to death for killing woman with screwdriver
A lagos State High Court sitting at Ikeja and presided over by Justice Sarah Sedoten Ogunsanya on Wednesday sentenced a school bus driver, Godwin Etute, to death by hanging for the gruesome murder with a screwdriver of a co-employee, Tolulope Adisa, over mere insults.
The judgement was sequel to the evidence proven beyond doubts by the prosecution, Adebayo Haroun& M. M Balogun, which found the suspect guilty as charged.
The 32years old driver, an indigene of Edo State, and the deceased, who usually assist him secure the pupils while he drives, were both employees at the Value Land Nursery and primary school at No. 13 Lateef Lasisi street, Egbe Lagos.
Etute, who was employed barely 8 months before the incident, committed the crime on the 27th of January, 2012 at 0600hrs behind Aris Hotel, Egbe Lagos, in the Ikeja judicial Division.
Having admitted being culpable of the crime through a confessional statement, Etute was charged on a one count charge of murder contrary to section 211 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2011.
According to Haroun, the suspect, who claimed to have a long endured, unbearable insults from the deceased, took her on the bus to a solitary vicinity on that fateful day, ordered her out and stabbed her viciously on the left side of her neck with a screwdriver.
‘the suspect, after committing the act, dragged the victim’s lifeless body into the bus and dumped her behind the aforementioned hotel. While he sped off to wash off the blood stains on him and on the bus’, he noted.
The prosecution further affirmed that an anonymous lawyer found the deceased body behind the hotel, and reported the matter at Ikotun police station.
‘Onlookers, present at the crime scene to identify the body, also found a shirt stained with blood hidden, at a corner, which was latter identified as belonging to the driver, during investigation’
Justice Ogunsanya, however, sentenced the suspect to death asserting that there is a direct link between suspect and the shirt soaked in blood. Hence, the verdict was given in believe of the evidence of the prosecution’s witnesses.
The defence, K. O Adebayo further revered gratitude to the court for the judgement and noted that this would send a clear message to the would-be murderers.
