Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has described the Judiciary as the hope of the common man in the society.
He stated this on Friday at the Thanksgiving service/Court session held as part of activities to kick-start the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the State Judiciary in Yenagoa, the State capital.
He noted that the legal year is an annual ritual but that the Christian Scriptures (Holy Bible) says Men should first seek for God’s kingdom and then all other things shall be added onto him.
The governor said: “Today we’re handing over this new legal year to the hand of God, because we know that the judiciary will never be the same again. Believe you’re going to do beyond our expectations.
“In this country today without exception, I appeal to us Nigerians, Bayelsa people to allow the judiciary to be used by God, to be allowed to work to the best of their ability and conscience to deliver incorruptible and sound judgement.
“Judgement that will enhance the standard of awareness to the general public”.
Diri also said that the trust of the public lies with the the judiciary which demand justice for all manner of people, irrespective of the class in the society urging the Judiciary and Judges to always stand tall on what is right as they are an autonomous arm of Government.
In her speech, the State’s Chief Judge, Justice Matilda Abrakassa-Ayemieye commended the state government for the support in various ways to ensure that the judiciary is autonomous.
He said the State’s Judiciary has a cordial relationship with the Nigeria Bar Association, the Legislature and the Executive,nothing that they have been working together without rancour.
He noted that: ”The New Legal Year allows us to access our activities and performance in the previous year. The celebration is a day of accountability for the judiciary and the people we administer justice with the law.
“The Bayelsa judiciary aspires to be the best judiciary in the world. We have earn respect among other judiciary in the country”.
On his part, the State’s Attorney-General/Commissioner of Justice, Mr Biriyai Dambo, SAN, expressed optimism over the commencement of the new legal year, noting that the Ministry and the Judiciary were committed to service delivery in the State and beyond.
He commended the Bar and the Bench for their hard work in ensuring that justice is served in the State.
He said: “In the past years, the judiciary has changed. The welfare of the judiciary staff and that of the Ministry of Justice is one of the priorities of the governor Diri’s administration. The governor has paid in full all monies owed law officers.
“This current administration has boost the moral of law officers,and they’ve contributed to effective justice delivery in the state.
“This current administration has equally assisted the NBA Yenagoa and Sagbama branch respectively. My office is wide open to enhance the justice system in Bayelsa state”.
