Dele Farotimi, a prominent lawyer and human rights activist, has been granted a N50 million bail by the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The court’s decision was announced by Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election, via his Twitter handle on Monday.
According to Sowore’s tweet, the bail conditions require Farotimi to provide a N50 million surety in the like sum with someone who owns landed property. The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025, for further proceedings.
Farotimi’s arrest and detention sparked widespread outrage across the country, with civil society organizations and the Nigeria Bar Association calling for his release.
He was accused of defaming Chief Afe Babalola, a 95-year-old Senior Advocate of Nigeria, in a book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System”.
