The National Centre for Women Development has graduated about 300 women from its various vocational skills acquisition programs.
The participants, trained on various vocations which include fashion and garment making, hospitality and tourism, interior decoration, hides decoration and catering, are now empowered to augment family income through their newly acquired skills.
Acting Director General of the centre, Mallam Sadiq Umar said, the fashion and garment industry this year has the highest number of participants which is an indication that the industry has the capability to earn the nation foreign exchange in the future.
“This programs are based on the recognition that women’s economic empowerment is the first step to freedom. The programs are structured to give the beneficiaries a voice and that confidence to cope in an environment where competition is the order of the day,” Umar said.
Minister of Women and Social Development, Senator Aisha Mohammed, represented at the event, said, “The Ministry is collaborating with other Ministries and Agencies to create the atmosphere for empowerment of women through the establishment of appropriate investment.”
Representative of the Bank of Industry (BOI) at the event, Hajia Amina Isa explained how the BOI can be of help in terms of financing. “It is a youth entrepreneur scheme, an applicant can apply within N1million to N5million and BOI can actually assist in financing everything.”
