Multiple explosions were heard in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in Northeast Nigeria on Saturday morning as people are setting out for elections.
Ahmad Salkida, a journalist believed to know the workings of the insurgents and with sources among them, said the explosions were more 10 and that the attacks started around 5:50am.
He also reported on his verified Twitter account that: “Sources are reporting several attacks in Yobe by #ISWAP, as #Maiduguri woke up to #BokoHaram attacks, this morning.”
He described the attacks as being carried out by “several suicide Bombers” and that their “mostly RPG fire targeted towards the metropolis from the outskirts,” adding, however, that the response by the Nigerian military made BokoHaram not to march on into the city centre.
According to him, the situation seemed to have been contained by the Nigerian troops,as at press time.
“Hopefully people will be assured to go out and cast their votes, but there is also the urgent need for air surveillance and body search of every person walking in the streets of Maiduguri,” noted Salkida.
The journalist lamented over the response of some members of the public, saying that “there are some people that want us to pretend that all is well.
“Ignore the bomb attacks and never report the casualties of war, even when your loved ones are the victims. This crisis is far from over because 10 years on, we have not started addressing the conflict indicators.”
The military is yet to tissue any statement over the incident.
