The medical director of the Bayelsa state government own veterinary hospital, Yenagoa , Dr Emara-obebh Ibegu has described the animal care health infrastructure as one amongst the best projects the restoration Government of the Serieke Dickson administration has provided for the state.
Speaking with our correspondent yesterday in Yenagoa, the state capital, Dr Ibegu maintained that the facility which was practically absent in the state prior to the inception of the Governor Dickson’s administration now provides adequate in-care and ambulatory care for animals within the state, emphasizing that these feats were unprecedented and unheard of in Bayelsa before the establishment of the veterinary hospital.
According to the medical director, charges for animal care in the faculty are minimal compared to privately owned ones stressing that merges and pet owners take advantage of the moderate prices paid for services in the hospital.
The medical director while commending the state Government on their support for the facility also called on the public to alert the hospital and other appropriate Government departments in the event of an outbreak of any zoonotic (animal diseases) infections in their farms for prompt action, stressing that the recent outbreak of monkey pox disease in the state was curbed and adequately handled by the ministry of health in conjunction with the veterinary hospital.
Dr. Ibegu said though the bane of the health facility is inadequate power supply and absence of some of the needed laboratory equipments the management is working hard to put things in their proper shape, emphasizing that the hospital has been functioning since its establishment with even a number of animal surgeries carried out.
The animal health facility MD gave some names of Zoonotic diseases and from which animal they can be contracted when such animals are not treated as follows: Rabbis…dog, Ebola…wild animals, Anthrax…cattle,
Rinderpest…cattle and tuberculosis also from cattle and pig. Others include bird flu…poultry and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) which is also contracted through poultry. The MD warned that consumers should not just buy animals and meat for consumption from an unknown source.
It would be recall that the Bayelsa state government recently built and equipped a veterinary hospital along the Imiringi road in Edepie, Yenagoa.
