Wife of the Governor of Bayelsa state, Dr (Mrs) Gloria Diri has said she would continue to support efforts aimed at ensuring that nursing mothers in the state get the needed leverage to comfortably practice adequate breastfeeding of their newborns.
She made the pledge on Thursday at the state’s version of the 2024 flag-off ceremony of the world breastfeeding week and world breastfeeding record attempt held in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Dr Diri who was represented by the State Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Elizabeth Bide, said that the importance of exclusive and adequate breastfeeding can not be overemphasized.
She said: “At birth infants were expected to be breastfed exclusively for at least six months before introduction to other sources of nutrition.
“I would like to advise nursing mothers never to be deterred from feeding their newborns with their natural breast milk. Available health statistics shows that aside the benefit of ensuring proper growth of children, practice of breastfeeding by women also reduces the risk of breast cancer as well as leads to reduction on economic expenses on feeding for newborns”, she said.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the state’s Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Williams Appah, noted that to have healthy children after birth mothers should endeavour to practice exclusive breastfeeding in order to boost the growth and development of their newborns.
He lauded the United Nations children’s fund(Unicef), the World Health Organization (WHo), and other partners for their commitment in sponsoring programmes aimed at ensuring the well-being of children in the state, promising to strengthen collaborations between the state’s primary healthcare board and partnering organizations.
The theme of this year’s event is ”Closing the Gap: Break the record, break barriers: Breastfeeding support for all”.
National Wire reports the event was held simultaneously across the nation with officials from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Development, Unicef, the WHO and the national primary healthcare agency saying no fewer than 30,000 nursing mothers stationed in various locations participated in the 2024 edition of the programme.
In the same vein, the Chairman, Bayelsa state Primary HealthCare Development Board(BPHCDB), Chief (Dr) Markson Amaegbe-Tamuno has also commended partnering organisation and nursing mothers in the state for the show of commitment on breastfeeding.
He said the number of nursing mothers who participated in the event was a pointer that more women now have awareness on the health benefits of breastfeeding.
Highpoints of the event was a record breaking national attempt on simultaneous practice of breastfeeding by scores of nursing mothers across several locations, as well as goodwill messages by individuals and partnering organizations.
