The Bayelsa state Medical University (BMU), at the weekend held her 3rd matriculation ceremony.
In his remarks at the event, the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Gentle Emelah described the institution as a foremost citadel of learning for the Medical and Health Sciences.
Emelah commended management of the institution for putting in their best to ensuring that the institution becomes one with a global reckoning, this was just as he said due to the premium the state Governor, Senator Douye Diri places on Education, all necessary support would be giving to the school within the limited available resources of the state to fast track its developmental processes.
He said:”Today is not a day for long speeches, having heard from the management of the university all I can say is that the government would continue to support this school to make it one of the best medical institutions of learning in and beyond the shores of Nigeria.
“The prosperity government of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri is committed to ensuring that all necessary assistance is giving to all higher institutions of learning owned by the government in the state.”
National Wire learnt that the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) which was established by the immediate past administration of former Governor of the state, Senator Seriake Dickson is the second state-owned Medical University in Nigeria and the first state-owned institution of sort in the South-South region of the country.
An address by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor, Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Paingha Joe Alagoa to commemorate the ceremony, the Don described the 3rd matriculation of the university as historic.
The academics noted that the establishment of the Bayelsa Medical University has increased the number of places available to potential students in the Nigerian higher education institutions, saying that before the establishment of the institution there were a limited placement for admissions in the country.
He said there is a very high demand for placement in medical schools in Nigeria which he noted that the higher education system has not been able to adequately address, reiterating however, that with the founding of the Bayelsa Medical University, the quota for sciences as well as medical and health sciences students has increased significantly in Nigeria.
Giving a breakdown of students admitted for the 2021-2022 academic session, the Vice Chancellor stated that a total of 219 fresh students and five(5) JUPEB students distributed into fifteen (15) academic programmes were admitted into the school.
Etebu hinted that while 55 students gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery, 50 secured admission to pursue their academics in Nursing Science while ten(10) students got admission to study Dentistry.
National Wire further gathered that other departments in which students gained admissions in the 2021-2022 academic session include Optometry, 18, Physiotherapy, nine (9), Medical Laboratory Science, 33, Human Anatomy, 17, Human Physiology, seven(7), Public Health, seven(7), Microbiology, 15, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, one(1) and Community Health, two(2) students, respectively.
The VC said: “Today, history is being made in Bayelsa state as the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) will be conducting its 3rd matriculation ceremony to formally admit about 219 fresh students and five JUPEB students into fifteen (15) academic programmes.”
