It was celebration galore for the Bayelsa State Branch of Gaskiya college old Students as they roll out the drums in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, within the week to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of their Alma Mater, Gaskiya College, Lagos.
The Diamond Jubilee celebration was also used to honour three of their own who have made the branch proud as ex-students of the prestigious second generation post independence College in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.
Chief Host of the occasion, Comrade Eneyi Zidougha, who was the Senior Prefect of the Class of ’86 and plies his professional career as an Investment Banker and Financial Accountant, and at present, the Labour Party Chairman of Bayelsa State, thanked the old students and the state branch for the honour and recognition done him to identify and celebrate him for his feat in politics in the oil rich State.
A statement made available to Newsmen by the publicity Secretary of the Gaskiya college class ’91, Comrade Amatare Mozimo quoted the the chief host of the anniversary Programme, Senior Zidougha pledging to give full support to the activities of the branch in order to put the College on the spotlight in education nationwide.
The co-host, Senior Suode Adigwe, of the Class of 80, who recently retired from the Bayelsa State Civil Service as a Substantive Director and Principal of Community Secondary School, Azikoro, appreciated the house for celebrating her even on her birthday recently marked on April 4, 2023.
Mrs Adigwe, joined another retiree of the Old Students body, Senior Elder Warrant Akposeye of the Class of ’81, to thank God for meritorious services as public servants for thirty- five years with unblemished record to the State and Nation.
Elder Warrant who served in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture reeled out his various adventures in the Federal Civil Service, just as he adviced younger ones to imbibe the spirit of discipline and professionalism in their various callings.
Earlier, in his opening remarks, the Bayelsa State Branch Chairman of Gaskiya College Old Students, Senior Harrison Agbalalah, of the Class of ’91, thanked members for their unalloyed solidarity, zeal and commitment to the School and the State Chapter during quarterly meetings as he assured that with the spirit of camaraderie existing amongst members, the future is surely bright and better for Gaskiya College Alumni in the state and worldwide.
Highpoint of the occasion, was the cutting of the 60th anniversary cake and toast to the founder of the College, the late, Sir Babatunde Lawrence (aka Baba Gaskiya) whose post humous silver jubilee is also commemorated to extol his virtues of discipline, hard work and resilience imbued in students of the old College, founded on March 3, 1963, in Lagos State and Benin Republic.
The Old Boys and Girls spent time recalling fond memories of the school in their old days as they re-launched a scholarship scheme to carter for the best indigent students of Bayelsa origin, in the Senior and Junior cadres of the school.
Apart from the three celebrants, and the state Chairman, others present at the Golden Jubilee occasion of Gaskiya College in Bayelsa State included, Senior Jebba Christopher Davies (G’88), Senior Eriye Ogboke (G’88); Senior Amatare Mozimo (G’91); Mrs Selepreye Koin (G’91) who doubled as the immediate past National President of the old students Association; and Senior Dide Eyanbri of the Class of ’96.
Others were, Surveyor Jennifer Beredugo (G’97) and Mrs Ablous Umoru (Nee Eyanbri) (Aka Fabmama of G’99) amongst others.
