Ahead of its 3rd Global Reunion, the Egbu Girls Old Girls Association (EGOGA) has conducted a groundbreaking ceremony to commence the first phase of its over ₦300 million modern dormitory project for the school.
The ceremony was officiated by Rt. Rev. Bishop Geoffrey Okorafor, the proprietor of the school.
In a statement made available to National Wire and signed by Ugonma Cokey, Global Public Relations Officer of the association, the event was attended by executive members of the association, including Lady Barrister Stella Amamasi, Hon. Justice Vicky Isiguzo, and Barr. Ethel Echebima. Also present were Dame Irene Duru, Lady Kalaya Opara, the principal (an alumna), her staff, and several students of the school.
The dormitory project is part of EGOGA’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the school. It aims to improve security, provide better accommodation, and create a conducive learning environment for students, while also encouraging more students to become boarders.
According to the Global President, Mrs. Ijeoma Enekwa, “If, in spite of the dilapidated buildings, our students continue to win international competitions, there’s no telling what they will achieve with good dormitories and a supportive environment.”
During its 2nd reunion, which marked the school’s 60th anniversary, the association produced a compendium to raise funds for the dormitory. Prior to the groundbreaking, EGOGA had conducted a survey of the dormitory compound and completed several preliminary projects, including perimeter fencing to secure the area, construction of a signage and gate, and provision of washrooms and toilets. Class sets contributed a kitchen, laboratory equipment, mattresses, and water tanks, while chapters donated notebooks and other learning materials. A few months ago, the North American Chapter renovated a classroom block, and plans are underway to equip the classrooms further.
The association is seeking additional funds before and during the reunion to support the completion of the dormitory’s first phase, before embarking on phase two. Mrs. Enekwa added, “Individuals can sponsor the construction of a chalet and brand it in their name or the name of a family member.”
The 3rd Global Reunion
The 3rd Global Reunion is scheduled to hold from December 18 to 21. This triennial event features the Winifred Hubbard Lectures, instituted in honor of the school’s first principal. The theme for this year’s reunion is Mentorship for Girl Child Safety and Empowerment.
Members of EGOGA include distinguished figures such as Nigeria’s first female stockbroker, Mrs. Lizzy Ebi; Dame Comfort Obi, publisher of The Source Magazine; former First Lady of Ondo State, H.E. Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu; Hon. Justice Vicky Isiguzo; and other prominent alumni from across Nigeria and the diaspora.I
