President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in Nigeria’s security architecture with the appointment of new service chiefs in a decisive move to strengthen national security and enhance the country’s response to persistent threats.
The changes, announced by the Presidency on Friday, come amid ongoing security challenges, including Islamist insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and separatist agitations in the southeast.
General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa, who held the position for just over two years following Tinubu’s assumption of office.
Other key appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his role as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
“All appointments take immediate effect,” the Presidency stated, signaling Tinubu’s renewed commitment to tackling the nation’s complex security challenges through fresh leadership and strategic reforms.
