Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed reports alleging that he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the claims as “mischief” and “disinformation.”
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @MKKyari, Kyari expressed dismay over the circulation of what he termed a “calculated attempt” by an online newspaper and its unnamed sponsors to mislead the public.
“Over the past few days and in particular in the past 2 hours, I have been inundated with calls from concerned family and friends over claims… that I was in the custody of the EFCC,” Kyari stated. “This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt… to achieve a desired outcome, which only them know.”
Kyari explained that he is currently on a break following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL management and board. He emphasized that after 34 years of service—17 of which were in management, including nearly six years as Group CEO—he had little opportunity to take personal leave and is now enjoying a much-needed rest.
“I served not only my country but also God. I am happy to account for my stewardship,” he said, adding that he worked with the fear of God and remains ready to respond to all lawful queries.
Kyari also cautioned the media against spreading unverified information, warning that such actions could damage the reputation of the NNPCL and send wrong signals to investors and the international community.
“I urge the media to be circumspect and avoid being stampeded into misleading the public on unverified stories,” he advised.
He concluded by thanking family and friends who reached out amid the rumours, assuring them of his availability and willingness to be accountable.
