Suspected herdsmen abduct Catholic priest in Enugu

Catholic priest in charge of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ukana, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Aniako Celestine has been abducted by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Saturday evening.

The development may have been generating tension in the area as the priest is yet to be released.

The priest was said to have been on his way back from a visit to his home town of Ezeagu when he was seized by the hoodlums who have demanded a ransom of N10 million using Aniako’s mobile number.

Just last week, activities of herdsmen in Ugwuleshi, Awgu Local Government Area of the state, led to the destruction of farmland and livestock worth millions of Naira. Also, 76 members of the community were detained in the process and were later granted bail by Umuahia Magistrate’s Court last Friday after the intervention of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Activities of the herdsmen have caused untold hardship in the area in recent times and the affected communities are now pleading with the government for a lasting solution.

State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the abduction of the priest, saying the command was on their trail.
