The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently hosted a virtual stakeholders’ forum to shape the new Application-to-Person (A2P) Messaging Licensing Framework.
This move aims to address challenges in the international A2P messaging space, including consumer protection, fraud prevention, and ensuring industry fairness.
The proposed regulatory framework seeks to create a sustainable and thriving A2P messaging ecosystem that protects consumers, promotes fair competition, and unlocks new opportunities for growth.
Key objectives include centralizing international A2P message routing, mandating compliance with a unified platform, protecting user data with stringent security protocols, and fostering a competitive and transparent market.
Mrs. Chizua Whyte, Acting Head of Legal and Regulatory Services, who represented the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the significance of A2P messaging in today’s digital world.
She highlighted the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in effective regulation, noting that the forum is an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions.
The NCC’s goal is to create a regulatory environment that supports innovation, protects stakeholders, and ensures the telecommunications sector thrives.
The commission encourages stakeholders to provide feedback and contribute ideas to refine the framework and meet the needs of all parties involved.
The Representative of EVC of NCC noted that the forum marks a pivotal step toward addressing these challenges. Today we will be presenting the proposed regulatory framework for A2P messaging to you, our valued stakeholders, for deliberation. This framework represents our commitment to fostering innovation while ensuring that all players in the value chain operate in a fair, transparent, and secure environment.
