The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Bayelsa state sector command on Tuesday 5th November, 2024 began this year’s’Ember month’ campaigns.
In a media parley held at the instance of the Sector Commander, Corp Commander RS6.4 Patrick, I. Ikaba to inform the public of the activities lined-up to commemorate the event, he said the programme would climax on Thursday 7th November, 2024 with a town hall meeting with traditional rulers, transport unions and other major stakeholders in the transportation sector of the state.
According to him Wednesday 6th November is slated for a motorcade round the Yenagoa metropolis followed by a sensitisation campaign, noting also that Friday 8th and Sunday 10th November are for sensitisation activities by the Corp in some mosques and churches regarding the ember month.
The Corp Commander said the 2024 ember month campaign is tagged: “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers”.
He noted that targeted audience for the sensitisation programme include motorists and commuters, traders and business operators in road side markets, amongst others.
The state’s FRSC boss who cautioned against night journeys hinted that the maximum speed limit approved by the Corps on roads was 100km/hour, saying that the Corp frowns against vehicles carrying passengers together with goods and animals at same time following the higher risk associated with it.
He said: Our targeted audience for this year’s ember month enlightenment campaign are transporters and commuters and the general public, especially our sisters and brothers doing trading in markets close to the roads.
“You know that when there’s an accident at the market there’ll be a greater number of casualties. The FRSC seriously frowns at overloading of goods and passengers in vehicles.
“We want to advise that people shouldn’t travel at nights during this ember month periods. And if you must travel then travel in the day. By so doing some accident which happens at night could be avoided”.
