UNICEF Warns of Potential Rise in FGM Cases by 2030 Without Global Intervention
In response to the ongoing threat of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the recent controversial decision by Gambia to reverse legal protections against the practice, Serene Early-Trobb Concepts (Initiative), a non-governmental organization committed to safeguarding the rights of vulnerable girls and women, has initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at combatting FGM.
According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), despite a decline in the prevalence of FGM over the past three decades, projections suggest that without intensified global efforts, the number of girls and women subjected to this harmful practice could rise in the coming years.
The campaign, which commenced in March 2024, seeks to achieve ‘Zero Tolerance on Female Genital Mutilation and Other Harmful Practices Against Women and Girls.’ Through a series of enlightening sessions, Serene Early-Trobb Concepts aims to raise awareness about the dangers of FGM and highlight the legal repercussions under Nigerian law, as outlined in Section 6 of the VAPP Acts.
The inaugural campaign event, held at Arepo market near the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun state, saw active participation from community members and stakeholders. Serene Early-Trobb Concepts emphasized the urgent need to end the practice of FGM, citing its profound negative impacts on both physical and psychological health, including increased risks of infections, complications during childbirth, and mental health issues.
Speaking at the event, the Convener of Serene Early-Trobb Concepts stressed the importance of upholding the rights of women and girls to bodily autonomy, condemning cultural practices that perpetuate FGM. She called on community leaders, market influencers, and healthcare professionals to join forces in advocating for the eradication of FGM.
Experts in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) echoed these sentiments, debunking myths surrounding FGM and underscoring the inherent dangers associated with the practice. They emphasized the need for societal norms that reject FGM and support the holistic well-being of women and girls.
In alignment with the Nigerian government’s stance against FGM, community leaders and advocates pledged their commitment to support efforts to eliminate the practice, urging citizens to report instances of FGM and uphold the legal sanctions outlined in national legislation.
As Serene Early-Trobb Concepts continues its crusade against FGM, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to protect the rights and dignity of women and girls, advocating for a future free from the shackles of this harmful tradition.
