Christian Community Reacts Strongly to FIRS Advertisement
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is calling for a public apology from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) after a contentious Easter-themed advertisement sparked outrage among believers.
FIRS faced backlash for a social media post featuring a point-of-sale machine alongside the caption, “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.” The message, now deleted, elicited widespread offense among Christians, who found it disrespectful.
Abimbola Ayuba, CAN’s National Director of National Issues and Social Welfare, issued a statement urging action from government bodies, including President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Finance Wale Edun. Ayuba stressed the need for respectful communication, especially during religious holidays.
“In the light of recent events, we call upon the management of the FIRS to retract the message and offer a public apology for the distress caused,” Ayuba stated.
CAN emphasized the importance of the Easter period for solemn reflection and observance, urging respect for religious beliefs in public messaging.
The association further urged organizations to consider Nigeria’s religious diversity when crafting communications, promoting respect and peaceful coexistence.
