House of Reps passes bill to establish North East Development Commission

While the war on terror comes to an end, the obvious need for reconstruction and rehabilitation are of national concern.

Observing these needs, the House of Representatives Thursday, passed a bill for the establishment of North East Development Commission.

The Commission, when formed would receive funding from the Federal Government and donation from international donours for resettlement and rehabilitation of displaced persons in the North Eastern part of the country.

Also, the Commission would see to the reconstruction of roads, buildings, business premises destroyed while the insurgent operated in the area.

Expected to be well funded, the Commission would also address the issue of poverty, illiteracy and mental challenges facing the affected geo political zone as a result of the war.

Over two million people were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgents since May 2013 and about 250,000 from the total figure during the period fled into neighbouring Cameroun, Niger and Chad.

The terrorists also killed over 6,000 people in 2014 and carried out massive abductions including the 276 school girls in Chibok, Borno State.
