The killing of a Naval Rating at Olowojeunjeje, Ajegunle on Friday, 23rd June, 2023 in Lagos during a clash between two notorious cult gangs would continue to throw up some concerns about the safety of military personnel even when they tried to defend the defenceless in the society.
OS Harrison Godwin Idongesit with service number: X21440 was killed in the most bizarre circumstances as he was hit by a stray bullet during an inter criminal gang clash at Olowojeunjeje Street on Friday, 23rd June 2023 about 2000, Nationalwire News gathered.
It was learnt that Harrison was killed in a clash during a reprisal attack between a rival criminal gangs that specializes in One-Chance and Phone snatching syndicate that have been terrorizing the Ajegunle area.
According to finding within the force, it was revealed that there exist a long history of inter cult, criminal gang clashes within the community notorious for recording such incidences of killings.
It was further learnt that the particular reprisals had resulted to two earlier killings within the week where one gang member from each group was killed on Tuesday, 20th June 2023 at Amukoko and Wednesday, 21st June, 2023 about midnight at Nosamu Street respectively.
Based on that, it was further disclosed, the gang from Imam Street Amukoko came to Olowojeunjeje Street Ajegunle, where the rival gang had reportedly gathered and shot sporadically which left several persons sustaining bullet wound while three persons including OS Harrison were killed.
Before the tragic incident, OS Harrison, an 31AK, was serving at LLD Apapa and resident at Navy Barracks Mobile Road.
After the incident, his remains was first evacuated to Navy Medical Centre, Mobile Road about 2040hrs and later deposited at Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo Morgue about 0905, Saturday 24th June, 2023.
However, although no arrest has been made, the Tricycle used to convey the corpse of the deceased was seized at NMC Mobile Road.
A naval source revealed that the death of OS Harrison GI has, once again, renewed the call for naval personnel to maintain a high level of personal security at all times.
In addition, personnel have been admonished to “avoid late outings and hanging out with persons of controversial identities and red spot locations known to be susceptible to attacks by criminal elements.”
Also, “the ASA could ensure continued sensitization of personnel to exploit the usage of NN Messes and Mammy markets provided which holds some level of security.”
As a result of the senseless killing, Nigeria Police Force has been tasked to ensure proper investigation to unravel those behind the killing of the rating with a view to arresting them and ensure the law takes his cause.
In another development, a naval rating attached to the Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Imeri, Ondo State was also gruesomely murdered by hoodlums on Tuesday, 27 June 2023, at Idoani.
Men of the Nigerian Police on patrol had found the unconscious body of Ordinary Seaman Akingbabohun SA by the roadside around Idoani town market area and rushed him to Idoani General Hospital for medical attention.
Unfortunately, the rating passed away after efforts by the hospital staff to revive him.
