Cold Weather: Physician Advises On Safety Protocols, Diet, Dressing

Medical Director of God’s Goal Hospital, Ojo, Lagos, Dr. Gabriel Omonaiye has advised Nigerians especially Lagos residents to beware of their health as the weather gets colder.

Omonaiye in a chat with National Wire said residents should keep warm by all means to keep healthy.

“Keeping warm is important. People should keep wearing appropriate dresses (sweaters, suits etc.) that will help them maintain optimal body temperature,” he said.

The University of Ilorin trained physician also advised that, “Warm and adequate water intake, should be the norm to prevent dehydration.

“The use of sunglasses when outdoors to prevent dust and sand from getting into the eyes is also important,” he advised.

Omonaiye also added that people should beware of cracking lips and feet by using lubricants. “The use of lubricants such as Vaseline, coconut oil, shear butter on the lips, palms and the feet to prevent them from cracking is equally important while

Asthmatics should stay indoors as much as possible and have their inhalers handy. Face mask should be used when going out as well,” he said.

On best diet for the season, the Medical Director advised that, “Adequate and balanced diet will help to keep the immune system strong. Fruits are particularly good for the immune system, he said, warning that, people should “Avoid caffeine which can cause excessive urination (diuresis).”

For drivers, he said, “When driving, especially at dawn and night, extra caution should be the rule because of the reduced visibility. Drivers should reduce their speed, put on hazard light. If possible joggers and other pedestrians who go out at dawn should use reflective clothes.”

Concluding, he said people should get medical help when necessary and should be careful with fire especially in areas where bush burning is practiced.

“Wash the eyes regularly, wearing of caps and other head covers are also recommended to protect the hairs,” Omonaiye advised.
