Member representing Kolokuma/Opokuma constituency (ii) in the Bayelsa state House of Assembly, Honorable Wisdom Fafi has presented to the executives of the Bayelsa state council of the Nigeria union of Journalists,NUJ Covid-19 personal protection equipments.
Receiving the PPEs from the Assembly member in Yenagoa during the Week, leadership of the state council of the NUJ commended him for being sensitive to the plights of essential workers as Journalists in the wake of the deadly virus.
The NUJ tasked the Governments and private sector operatives to ensure the inclusion of media practioners and other essential workers in the presentation of Personal Protection Equipment and Pallaitives in order to protect and encourage performance and output in the cause of curbing the Covid-19 pandemic.
In his speech,former chairman of the Bayelsa state council,Comrade John Angese noted that despite the dangerous and engaging role of Journalists and other essential workers in the sensitization as well as security of lives and properties in the lockdown states these set of vulnerable workforce are left out of the provision of palliatives and PPEs by the Government and other employers.
Angese called on the Federal, State Governments and private sector to consider essential workers as the most vulnerable as they leave behind families at home to perform the needed duty to safeguard the lives of many Nigerians.
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Samuel Numenengi stated that inspite of the huge role played by Nigeria Journalists and other essential workers, they remain neglected and left vulnerable to contact the Covid-19 disease due to absence of PPE and other protective gadgets.
Numonengi applauded the lawmaker for his gestures,restating that the equipments would be put to use by the state council of the NUJ,just as he Stated that Journalists would rest in their oars in their sensitization efforts.
Earlier in his presentation, Hon. Wisdom Fafi pointed out that his decision to reachout to Journalists in these trying times was based on his Conviction that Media practitioners are critical stakeholders in the battle against Covid-19 pandemic.
“Journalists are at the forefront of the Covid-19 campaign,despite the fact that government cannot reachout to everyone at a time, the essential workers like Journalists need to be motivated and encouraged,” he said.
