Bayelsa 2019: INEC Declares Lyon Winner

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Monday declared Chief David Lyon, Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC winner of the 2019 Bayelsa State Governorship polls.

Declaring the result, the returning officer, Professor Orumwense Osasere of the University of Benin, Edo State announced the APC Candidate as winner polling a total of 352,552 votes to defeat his closest rival, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Senator Douye Diri who scored 143,172 votes.

Osasere said total number of accredited voters were 517,883 while a total of 495,724 were recorded as valid votes just as he said the state has a total 923,182 registered voters.

According to the University Don a further distribution of cast votes show Lyon polling 124,803 votes in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area as against Diri who polled 4,898.

INEC announced that the APC had 83,041 votes in Nembe Local Government, 24,607 in Yenagoa, 8,934 in Kolokuma/OPukuma, 7,831 in Sagbama and 21,489 votes Ekeremor Local Government Areas respectively.

Still, other  votes polled by the APC according to INEC include 23,831 in Brass and 58,016 in Ogbia Local Government Areas while the PDP from the result declared garnered 60,339 votes in Sagbama Local Government Council, 15,360 in Kolokuma/Opokuma, 10,410 in Brass, 13,763 in Ogbia and 18,344 votes in Ekeremor Local Government Areas respectively.

Further results polled by the PDP candidate as was declared by the electoral umpired were 874 votes for Nembe and 19,184 for the Capital City Local Government Area of Yenagoa.

Meanwhile Bayelsa State Governor-elect, David Lyon has assured the State of his resolve to tackle challenges of good Governance on the State.

The Governor-elect stated this in Yenagoa, Monday shortly after been declared as winner of the polls, stressing that insecurity, unemployment and infrastructural development would be accorded priority attention when sworn-in February 14th, 2020.

The Oil and Gas Mugul applauded the electorates for voting and returning him and his running mate elected, emphasizing that he would not disappoint them on the confidence reposed on him.

Lyon said “Bayelsans I thank you people for having confidence in me, my deputy and the APC. We will not disappoint you, we shall work and continue to work for the development and progress of the state. Bayelsa is a blessed state, the APC is the only party that can work to bring infrastructural development, economic growth and progress in this state and for all Bayelsans, congratulations.”
