Peace Corps Bill: Bayelsa Commandant Appeals To Buhari To Approve Takeoff

From Amos Odeh.

Mr Patriot Ogomah, State Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria in Bayelsa says he remains hopeful that President Muhammadu Buhari would heed appeals and accent the Peace Corps bill.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had on February 27 declined assent on Nigerian Peace Corps establishment bill , citing paucity of funds and duplication of duties of existing security agencies as main reasons.

Ogoma said in an interview on Sunday that the Corps was putting everything together for take off as soon as the bill gets Presidential assent.

Ogomah who hinged his own appeal on the need to maintain peace for economic development noted that the negative economic scenario that prevailed when the bill was presented to the President had given way.

He noted that take off of the corps would create jobs for the teeming youths who would be deployed across the federation, adding that the Niger Delta region was in dire need of personnel to promote peace.

He said that Bayelsa has eight Local Government Areas (LGA) to be manned by a Unit Commander in view of the large size of the LGAs to enhance the peace for increased oil production.

He said that Bayelsa Command of the corps recently distributed some New Uniform to their officers and men to demonstrate the optimism of the corps whilst awaiting the approval to commence operations.

Ogomah said the distribution took peace as at a time the Assistant Commandant Mr Oyemike Oyemike came on official visit to the state headquarters of Command in Yenagoa Bayelsa.

According to Ogomah,  Assistan National Commandant visited Bayelsa and other commands to ascertain the level of preparedness for take off as soon as the bill is signed into law.
