Government at all levels in the country have been called upon to “genuinely support the aged” and create health care facilities that would make life easy for the nation’s senior citizens.
The call was made by a former General Manager of Gateway Hotels, Abeokuta, Princess Ronke Joseph-Ogunremi, while fielding questions from select journalists recently in Abeokuta.
Joseph-Ogunremi, who is aspiring to represent the Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi Owode Federal Constituency at the lower Chambers of the National Assembly, also said adequate protection of the rights of women, children, youth and the aged would be one of her major legislative concerns when elected in the 2019 general elections.
She explained that the theme of her campaign: “Everybody counts,” is informed by her passion for a better life for the people, saying her legislative priorities would be to ensure the enactment of laws to enhance a better life for the people.
She decried the level of neglect suffered by old people in Nigeria, saying: “we have failed as a nation to protect the interests of the elderly despite their contributions to the development of the Country.”
She condemned the rigors the senior citizens are made to go through before they can enjoy social amenities and to even receive o their statutory entitlements.
