Lagos State government has directed residents within and around the community where the Olusosun dump site is situated to relocate.
This became necessary in view of the health, safety and environmental hazards that the smokes from the dump site located in the Ojota area of Lagos could cause,according to Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Hon. Hakeem Dickson.
It would be recalled that there was a fire outbreak from the site on March 14,necessitating the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to visit the place twice.
Dickson gave the advice on Monday during a pre-event Press Conference for a state government project, ‘Vision Zero,’launched at Alausa, Ikeja.
Dickson said the smokes this pose serious health challenges to residents within the locality, while stating that the government was doing everything possible to put out the inferno.
The D.G also disclosed that the state government was working towards ensuring zero accident in the workspace in the next three years.
He said this was the major reason the government launched the Vision Zero campaign, so that corporate bodies and individuals alike, would be safety conscious and be abreast of safety tips.
“Lagos Vision Zero is a transformational approach to prevention that interprets the tripod stand of safety, health and wellbeing at all levels at work. It was borne out of the need to reduce to the barest minimum, hazards and risks in the workplace, and ensure zero injury, zero accident, zero death and promote wellbeing and health.
“Vision Zero was launched globally at the 21st World Safety Congress held in Singapore 2017 and it focuses on building capacities and raising awareness at all all levels of work to cultivate a positive change mindset that all injuries and ill health caused are preventable and a belief zero harm is possible. Vision Zero will not be a destination but an ongoing journey,” Dickson said.
In light of this, he said governor Ambode will next month during a 3-day conference, sign a Safety Policy Document on safety at the workplace.
It is expected that at the end of the programme, a workplace safety template will be developed for the state and by extension guarantee the well-being of all workers in the state.
