The Presidency has said seeking international support and assistance in rebuilding and securing the North Eastern part of the country had been President Muhammadu Buhari’s concern right from the time of his electioneering campaign.
Media aides, on Friday, in series of messages through the Presidency Twitter handle, said the President had also emphasised the need to focus attention on that region of the country right from the start of the Buhari administration.
The response came on the heels of the criticism with which Nigerians greeted the revelation on Thursday by the World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim, that the Bank has focused its activities on the North Eastern part of Nigeria in line with President Buhari’s request.
“Northeast Nigeria has always been a priority for President Buhari, right from when he campaigned to be President,” said Presidency.
“From the start of the Administration, President Buhari has consistently highlighted the need for International support to rebuild and secure the North East.”
The North East has featured prominently in all of the President’s engagements with the International Community, the statement added as it assured the public it is not a new development.
The government also said during the meeting with the World Bank in July 2015, the Bank pledged financial support toward securing the North East rebuilding it.
“Seeking International support and assistance for this, will continue to be a priority for us,” it reiterated.
The Presidency, however, expressed appreciation to various donors to the country.
“We remain grateful for the show of support from the international community, regarding the security and humanitarian situation in the North East,” it said.
