It was the height of human cruelty against animals this afternoon while scores of poultry birds were being transported from the Mainland to the Lagos Island via the Third Mainland Bridge. The heavy rain, heavy traffic tortured the birds being conveyed to the Lagos Island.
The birds predominantly layers were drenched in the morning rain and helplessly caged behind the van conveying them to a certain destination.
Coupled with the rain, there was heavy traffic on the bridge which made the birds so exhausted.
The layers if still being expected to lay, the harsh weather condition they were exposed to would definitely reduce their laying quality.
Developed by cross breeding a Rhode Island Red and a New hampshire Red the brown layers were also at one time breed with white leghorn in them. They are a dual purpose breed and mostly used for their excellent egg production, 300+.
In the 1950s the Production Reds just about put the purebred Rhode Island Red into extinction.
In Nigeria, the brown layers are mostly used for egg production and at the end of their lifespan they are sold as old layers for the table.
A crate of eggs in the Lagos metropolis is sold between N1,100 and N1,250 and eggs are used for variety of meals and pastries in homes and fast food joints.
