The board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has held an emergency meeting to review the Etisalat debt issue in its entirety and also the intervention made by the commission. This is even as a House of Representatives panel on Thursday intervened in the current financial crisis that is rocking the telecom company in order to forestall further crisis.
The Committee on Telecommunications, chaired by Rep SaheedAkinade-Fijabi (APC, Oyo), on Thursday directed the NCC to immediately conduct financial audit of Etisalat and all other telecoms companies with a view to ascertaining their integrity.
Fijabi said during a meeting with some officials of the NCC in Abuja that the action was to prevent loss of revenue to the Nigerian government and ensure security for Nigerians working in such companies.
The panel also cautioned Nigerian authorities against any attempt to take over the company without following due process as contained in the NCC Act, saying it would invite relevant anti-graft agencies to look into the matter.
