Commissioner of police Lagos state command, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has reiterated that the command will continue to abide by the creed of the Nigeria Police Force as set out by the Inspector General of Police.
He stated this while briefing newsmen on the activities of the command yesterday at the police headquarters, Ikeja.
According to him, a case of police high-handedness was brought to his attention on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, where some policemen from ogudu who were on traffic patrol had an altercation with a family and the wife of the driver was brutalized by the officers at ojota area of the state.
“There was a case of police high-handedness that was brought to my attention at ojota where some policemen from ogudu who were on traffic patrol had altercation with a family and the wife of the driver was brutalized. I intervened and doused the tension. The officers who had conducted themselves in a manner that is against the ethics of the force and the norms of democratic policing are now being handled departmentally.
The CP also mentioned that some alleged air force personnel attacked Alakara police station on Tuesday with a view to forcefully release a female suspect that was in the police custody and wounded a policeman in the course of the attack.
He added that investigation is ongoing in collaboration with the air force to bring under control the elements that are out of control, reiterating that the police and the military institution with other sister security agencies in Lagos state are not at war and that it is just some elements who has refused to abide with the ethics of the respective institutions with their over zealousness that wants to create unnecessary tension.
Also, five suspected armed robbers were apprehended but two died in a gun feud with the police while trying to resist arrest, just as five suspected kidnappers were also arrested while four different types of fire arms were recovered from criminal elements with 21 rounds of live ammunitions and five exotic vehicles.
“The command will continue to abide by the creed of the NPF as set out by the IGP which among other things that we conduct ourselves in an ethical manner and we conduct our duties with the best policing standard and with respect of the right of the citizens and observers of the rule of law. We will not relent in fishing out policemen that are anti-democratic and will not conform to the ethics of the force. Where any policemen are seen to have misconduct themselves, we want to encourage you, our able journalists and the citizens to immediately bring it to our attention so that we will promptly attend to the matter, including acts of corruption.” He said.
