63 VVF patients get free surgeries in Niger

A Consultant Gynecologist and  Wife of the Niger state Governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello has said that in the last two years, 63 patients that were  suffering from Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) underwent free surgeries, while 2,174 women got free cancer screening and cancelling in the state  through her Non- Governmental  Organization {NGO} Raise Foundation .

The breakdown , according to her , showed  that 19 VVF surgeries were performed at the Kotangora General Hospital, 30 at the Umaru Sanda Ndayako hospital, 10 at the  General hospital,  Minna , while  Four  patients had theirs at Katsina Fistula Centre.

This was contained in a Press  statement by her  Press Secretary, Aisha Wakazo , while also disclosing further that no fewer than about  1, 029 women got free cervical cancer screening test  as  1, 145 were for breast cancer screening in conjunction with some non-governmental organizations.

The statement stated  further that out of those screened for breast cancers,  15 have developed lump with nine of them referred for mammography, while two other patients  with advanced stage were on referral outside the state adding  the cost of the surgeries was paid by the wife of the governor.

According to the statement 1, 500 women drawn from rural areas across the 25 Local Governments of the state   have so far benefited from different empowerment programmes some of whom have also become employers of  labour.

“Seventy-two women cooperatives have received cheques in various sums for agricultural activities; 250 women and youths on embellishment, tailoring and decoration”, the statement said.

It also said that over 100  women and youths were trained on leather work, bead making, even as 500 other women were also empowered with multipurpose crop milling machines in Lavun, Paikoro and Gurara local governments of the state  respectively within the period  under review amongst others.
