Niger Govt Orders Immediate Closure Of All School Following Kidnapping Of Students In Papiri Agwara Local Government The Niger State Government has announced the immediate closure of all public and private Primary and Secondary Schools across the State following the recent kidnapping of students of St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area of the State.. The directive was issued by, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, shortly after an emergency security meeting with heads of security agencies in Minna. Governor Umaru Bago further directed that all Missionary and Islamic Schools, as well as Federal Government Colleges operating within the State including the Federal Government College, Minna be shut down until further notice as part of measures to prevent further security breaches. The Governor clarified that Tertiary Institutions remain unaffected by this directive, except those located within the identified vulnerable areas of Niger North and Niger East Senatorial Districts, where additional security assessments are currently ongoing. Governor Bago condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as “sad and unfortunate.” He emphasized that the paramount priority of the State Government is the safe rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and all other kidnapped victims across the State. He called on all heads of security agencies, Civil Society Organisations, labour unions, religious leaders and community stakeholders to unite and intensify efforts toward the rescue operations and the restoration of peace. The Governor disclosed that the exact number of abducted students is yet to be confirmed, as the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and other security operatives are currently conducting a meticulous headcount and verification exercise to ascertain the accurate figure. The Command stated this in a Crime Bulletin issued and made available to Journalists by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO ) attached to the State Police Command SP Wasiu Abiodun and made available to Journalists on Wednesday in Minna. According to the Crime Bulletin, “on November 17, 2025 at about 9pm, Police surveillance team attached to Tudun-Wada Div, while on stop and search around Western Bye-Pass intercepted two suspects on a motorcycle:Habibu Isyaku 20yrs and Musa Yakubu 18yrs, both of Texaco area of Maitumbi, Minna. It added that the suspects were subjected to on-the-spot search, adding that a locally made gun was recovered. The Spokesman of the State Police Command, SP Abiodun, said that “During interrogation, they allegedly couldn’t give a satisfactory account of themselves and were suspected to be robbing members of the public along the Bye-Pass”. He however assured that further investigation is ongoing, and suspects will soon be transferred to SCID Minna. In another development, the Crime Bulletin noted that earlier,” on November 14 2025, Police operatives attached to Central Police Div, Minna carried out a sting operation in some identified black spots around Sayako, Tudun-Natsira, Abdul Salam Qtrs, and Baida. It stated further that five suspects were arrested: Abdullahi Sani 27yrs, arrested with suspected cannabis, and a dealer in illicit substances, Mohammed Inuwa 21yrs, arrested with a sharp knife and suspected cannabis, Abbas Yahaya a.k.a Papalo 25yrs of Sayako, arrested with a long saw blade, Abdulrahman Ismail 29yrs of Abdul Salam Qtrs and Mohammed Abubakar 28yrs arrested with illicit substances. Bello Ahmed Agwara as commissioner, following a dramatic reversal of its earlier decision to suspend his screening. Agwara’s nomination had been temporarily stepped down during Tuesday’s plenary after lawmakers raised concerns about his previous actions as a former legislator. He was accused of having sued the Assembly during his earlier tenure, an act some members viewed as a breach of the oath of allegiance and office. The nominee, who appeared alongside nine others for screening on Tuesday, faced stiff opposition from several legislators who demanded that the executive withdraw his name from the list. However, prior to Wednesday’s session, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon.(Barr.) Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, announced that the matter had been resolved following a closed-door interface with the nominee. In defense of the Assembly’s initial stance, Muhammed Sani Idris, Member representing Tafa Constituency, clarified that the decision to pause the screening was procedural rather than punitive. “We did that not on a personal basis. We interviewed the nominee and we established that there was a gap somewhere and that is what resulted in the misinterpretation,” he said. “We still recognise him as one of our own. We didn’t do so to rubbish him but we did it because of the training we had which states that whatever we do, we should put our constituency, state, and nation first.” Speaking to journalists after his confirmation, Agwara expressed his readiness to work collaboratively with the legislature. He said, “This is politics and on our part, we will continue to give our own support and play our part,” . This was contained in a statement recently issued by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Sheikh Muhammad Awwal Aliyu, during which he explained that the Board have resumed preparations to the sacred journey after a period of absence, providing intending Christian pilgrims from the State the opportunity to walk into the footsteps of the Lord to pray. He also disclosed that the cost of the total package for this year’s main Christians pilgrimage is ₦3,860,000 and therefore, advised intending Christian pilgrims to make full payment at a designated Keystone Bank account on or before 15th, December, 2025, to confirm their participation in the pilgrimage.
