The Nigerian military has inaugurated a general court – martial to try officers accused in an alleged coup plot against the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
It was learnt that the officers arrived the venue of the sitting, the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess, Asokoro, about 8:53 a.m. on Friday, 24th April, 2026 under tight security.
Their civilian counterparts, had earlier within last week appeared before an Abuja High Court where their charges were read to them.
As the proceeding started, members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, (journalists) were barred from gaining access into the courtroom as proceedings commenced behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, the Defence headquarters has assured that the suspects will have the best of fairness, impartiality and strict adherence to due process, adding that justice will be served without fear or favour.
In a statement on Friday, the Director Defence Information (DDI), Major General Samaila Uba, further assures that all cases will be addressed within extant legal frameworks of the military justice system.
Uba stated that the DHQ remains resolute in upholding professionalism, discipline and the rule of law while ensuring that the rights of all personnel are respected and the tenets of fair hearing upheld.
According to him, the 36 serving military personnel are being tried over alleged mutiny, aimed at overthrowing the government President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The plot undercover in October 2025 when about 16 serving military personnel, comprising senior and junior officers, were arrested over alleged acts of indiscipline.
Subsequent investigations by military authorities, however, established that some of the officers had cases to answer bordering on an alleged attempt to overthrow the constitutional government, leading to the decision to subject them to court-martial.
Some of the 16 Officers Indicted over the alleged coup plot against Tinubu include Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, Nasarawa, 44th Regular Course; Colonel M. A. Ma’aji, Niger, 47th Regular Course; Lieutenant Colonel S. Bappah, Bauchi, 56th Regular Course; Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Hayatu, Kaduna, 56th Regular Course; Lieutenant Colonel Dangnan, Plateau, 56th Regular Course; Lieutenant Colonel M. Almakura, Nasarawa, 56th Regular Course; and Major A. J. Ibrahim, Gombe, 56th Regular Course.
Others include Major M. M. Jiddah, Katsina, 56th Regular Course; Major M. A. Usman, Federal Capital Territory, 60th Regular Course; Major D. Yusuf, Gombe, 59th Regular Course; Major I. Dauda, Jigawa, DSSC 38; Captain I. Bello, DSSC 43; Captain A. A. Yusuf; Lieutenant S. S. Felix, DSSC; Lieutenant Commander D. B. Abdullahi, Nigerian Navy and Squadron Leader S. B. Adamu, Nigerian Air Force.
