30 Football Fans Electrocuted in Calabar Viewing Centre

No fewer than 30 persons watching the Europa League football match between Manchester United and Anderlecht were electrocuted in Calabar yesterday evening.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that a transformer near the viewing Centre located in the Iyang-Esu area of the Calabar Municipal Local Government exploded during the match and caused a high-tension cable to cut off from its source and dropped on the viewing Centre zinc which sparked and ignited.

A survivor explained that the transformer had sparked a first time.

“The transformer sparked the first time and the lights went out, i became afraid and stepped out of the viewing Centre because the place is under a high tension. Others stayed and the next thing i heard was another explosion from the transformer and a cable fell on the roof of the center. It sparked and fire started, viewers started scrambling for safety but unfortunately, some were electrocuted while some have been burnt to death.” He explained in tears.
