The political wing of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bayelsa State Chapter which has as its name, ‘Workers Political Movement’ (WPM) has unveiled its PVCs Collection and voters sensitization exercises in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Speaking with Newsmen at its maiden sensitization rally held as part effort at discouraging voter aparthy amongst workers in both public and private sectors of the state, the Secretary of the Workers Political Movement (WPM), Comrade David Emiebor noted that the rationale behind the event was to enlighten and educate workers on the need to participate in the political processes.
He added that it was high time workers in the state started taking active part in deciding who becomes who and what in the state and national political spheres.
He said: “The essence of these exercises are to educate and enlighten workers, not only civil servants, but including those in the private sectors on the need to participate in the Political processes as to knowing the right people and candidates to vote for during elections.
“Workers can’t continue to be apolitical any longer while those who wouldn’t consider their plights are elected into political offices.
“As a movement under the umbrella body of the organized labour we want to thank the Nigerian Judiciary for setting the records straight on workers eligibility to vie for Political offices. Through the judgements and pronouncements of the Judiciary, we as workers now have a leverage to aspire and contest for elective positions across Nigeria.
” Our PVCs are our strength to vote and make the needed change in governance.”
Also speaking, the duo of the state chairmen of both the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade union Congress (TUC), Comrdes, John Ndiomu and Julius Laye, respectively spoke on the need for workers to take decisive steps in correcting all abnormalities they felt were being meted out by governments to workers through their active involvement in the political exercises.
The duo who also commiserated with the Academic staff union of Universities(ASUU), over their plights which occasioned their recent strike action, hinted that with the problems the former is facing even after calling off their industrial action, workers all over Nigeria could now see that their problems are beyond only embarking on periodic strike actions as a way of resolving them, hence they noted that the importance of the workers political movement(WPM) as the Political wing of the organized labour can not be overemphasized.
