The planned concession of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) was on Wednesday in Lagos endorsed by staff of the corporation.<\/p>\n

The employees however called on the Federal Government to pay their entitlements.<\/p>\n

The workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers and the Senior Staff Association Nigeria Railway Branch, said they were in support of the concession of the NRC\u2019s assets, if it would make the sub-sector a true hub of the Nigerian transportation system.<\/p>\n

They were, however, opposed to what they termed as \u2018wholesale transfer\u2019 of the workers\u2019 liabilities to the would-be concessionaire.
\nThe workers insisted on full settlement of all labour issues, including payment of a negotiated severance package by the Federal Government, before concluding the concession process and handing over to the concessionaire.
\nEsan Segun, the Secretary-General of NUR, at a rally said that 10,000 workers would be affected hence, the concession process should be transparent and due diligence followed.
\nSegun said: \u201cLet it be made abundantly clear that workers are not and will not be against the concession of the Nigerian Railway assets only if it is done with patriotism and due diligence, to make the rail sub-sector a true hub of the transportation system in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will also not antagonise the process if the Federal Government engages the workers in a dialogue.
\n\u201cWe will demand for a genuine and fair labour disengagement policy that guarantees our rights of fair severance benefits from the Federal Government, and that our demands are heard and fully met before conceding the railway\u2019s assets to a third party.\u201d<\/p>

Segun said that the workers would also keep their peace \u201cif the Federal Government decides today, among other things, to monetise the staff quarters to the workers, as directed by the monetisation policy of 2005.\u201d
\nThe Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in September confirmed negotiations for the concession of the narrow gauge lines across the country to General Electric.<\/p>\n

The agreement was to be signed before January 2017.
\nHowever, the Senate on Tuesday raised concerns over the project and called for a probe.<\/p>\n
