{"id":9377,"date":"2016-11-03T10:45:54","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T09:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=9377"},"modified":"2016-11-03T11:03:43","modified_gmt":"2016-11-03T10:03:43","slug":"rivers-senatorial-re-run-inec-gets-senate-ultimatum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/rivers-senatorial-re-run-inec-gets-senate-ultimatum\/","title":{"rendered":"Rivers Senatorial re-run: INEC gets Senate ultimatum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Senate Wednesday has threatened to suspend sitting if the electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fails to conduct the re-run Senatorial election in Rivers State by 10<sup>th<\/sup> of December.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu moved the motion yesterday on the floor of the Upper House.<\/p>\n<p>Failing to conduct the rerun election, Ekweremadu said INEC was breaching the Electoral Act.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the act had led to the absence of representatives from Rivers State both in the Senate and House of Representatives after the elections were declared inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p>A Senate Leader Ali Ndume, in his opinion on the issue, said\u201d \u201cIt could be any of us as in the case of River State. Imagine a state like mine ravaged by insurgency without a representation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a new leadership in INEC and yet the cases recorded have been inconclusive elections and sometimes confusion\u201d. Today we are taking Petroleum Industry Bill deliberations without any Senator from River State.\u201d<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Another Senator supporting the motion on the floor of the House was Senator Matthew Urhoghide who urged the Senate to\u00a0consider democracy in what they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no other way we can input inhumane treatment than what INEC is doing in Rivers State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the Senate INEC Committee, Senator Abubakar Kyari, however inform his colleagues that the latest information that he had from INEC was that elections in Rivers State would hold on December 10 December.<\/p>\n<p>After the deliberations, the Senate resolved to call on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct elections to vacant senatorial seats in Rivers State not later than December 10 or Senate Plenary will be suspended.<\/p>\n<p>Capping the deliberations, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said: \u201cThis is a very important motion targeted to improve our democracy. We will go with the information from the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all saw the new INEC Chairman during his screening, this a very challenging time for him and his commission to prove themselves.
