Washington \u2013 Report said that Donald Trump, U.S. Republican presidential candidate could have avoided paying federal income taxes for as long as 18 years.<\/p>\n

The information is contained in a leaked tax document obtained on Sunday by the New York Times in Washington.<\/p>\n

Trump The Republican presidential candidate\u2019s tax forms had been a major issue in the campaign because unlike other modern-day nominees for the White House, he had refused to make them public.<\/p>\n

The New York Times stated that Trump claimed he could not release them because he was being audited by the U.S. tax authority, in spite of the fact that there was no law or precedent to preclude their release.<\/p>\n

It referenced President Richard Nixon, as releasing his records while under audit in 1973.<\/p>

The New York Times reported that it had received Trump\u2019s 1995 income tax returns, in which he declared a 916-million-dollar loss due to failed business ventures.<\/p>\n

The paper disclosed that the \u201cTax experts it hired concluded that \u201crules especially advantageous to wealthy filers would have allowed Mr Trump to use his 916-million-dollar loss to cancel out an equivalent amount of taxable income over an 18-year period.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s critics have accused him of hiding something in his tax returns that could be damaging to his presidential bid.<\/p>\n

At their first debate last week Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton speculated he was not releasing them because they could reveal \u201che\u2019s not as rich\u201d or \u201ccharitable as he claims.\u201d Clinton said they might show \u201che\u2019s paid nothing in federal taxes,\u201d to which Trump interjected \u201cThat would make me smart.\u201d<\/p>\n
