NIMASA pledges to fully enforce the implementation of ISPS Code<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA) has again restated its position in ensuring the full implementation and enforcement of the International Ships and Ports Facility Security (ISPS) code in the nation\u2019s ports.<\/p>\n

The Director General, Dr. Dakuku Peterside stated this at the opening ceremony of a five-day training programme facilitated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in conjunction with NIMASA on ISPS code compliance in Lagos.<\/p>\n

Dr. Peterside\u00a0observed that skilled, efficient and talented workers are critical to the growth of the\u00a0maritime\u00a0sector assuring NIMASA will\u00a0continually equip its staff with new knowledge, skills and technologies\u00a0necessary to ensure compliance with the ISPS Code.<\/p>\n

According to the DG,\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>our people and values are\u00a0hallmarks of\u00a0a good and strong\u00a0organization.\u00a0Recognizing\u00a0that our greatest asset is our people, the leadership of the maritime industry in Nigeria,\u00a0is committed to building a skilled, talented and effective workforce. That is why we take advantage of every training programme to equip our people and prepare them for new challenges that come up daily in the course of carrying out their assignments\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also disclosed that in pursuit of its vision to reposition the maritime industry, NIMASA\u00a0has developed\u00a0an in-house training initiative to continuously update the skills of its staff and keep them in tune with various developments in the industry.<\/p>

While assuring the participants that the training will be continuous, Dr. Peterside also said that the Agency as the Designated Authority (DA) for the implementation of ISPS Code,\u00a0will work with local and International stakeholders to develop quality industry specific training for its staff,\u00a0to enhance their performance and productivity in the line of duty.<\/p>\n

The DG also used the opportunity to thank the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi for showing rare leadership in the maritime industry.\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Things are turning around in the maritime industry because we have a Minister who understands that the industry offers Nigeria a great opportunity to leapfrog our economy\u201d,\u00a0he stated.<\/p>\n

A statement issued by NIMASA\u2019s Head Corporate Communications, Hajia Lami Tumaka explained that the ISPS Code training which is being facilitated by consultants from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for\u00a0thestaff of NIMASA, NIWA, NPA and the Federal Ministry of Transportation,\u00a0involved in its implementation, is intended to bridge the\u00a0knowledge\u00a0gaps and strengthen the code\u2019s execution in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
