Barring any last minute change in decision, the Association of\u00a0Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has threatened to shut down\u00a0the nation\u2019s ports over 43 per cent hike in customs duty.<\/p>\n

President of the association, Alhaji Olayiwola Shittu who made this\u00a0disclosure on Thursday in Lagos, noted that the association condemned\u00a0in totality the monetary policy that led to the collapse of the\u00a0maritime industry.<\/p>\n

He expressed worry at the import regime of fixing the foreign exchange\u00a0rate at N331 to the dollar.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere should have been a deliberate effort to save Nigerian importers\u00a0from the debilitating effect of fixing the foreign exchange in\u00a0calculating the import duty,\u201d Shittu said.<\/p>\n

Shittu said that it was condemnable to force Nigerians to open form\u00a0\u2018M\u2019 for imports at N197 to the dollar and now forced to pay N331 after\u00a0the goods had been shipped.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cGovernments all over the world make conscious\u00a0efforts to protect the interest of their citizens.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWe are calling for a National Executive Council meeting of our\u00a0association where a date will be announced for total withdrawal of our\u00a0services\u201d, Shittu said.<\/p>\n

On the scramble by some agencies to return to ports, Shittu said this\u00a0was not unexpected because the regulatory agencies were too weak.<\/p>\n

He said the regulatory bodies were more interested in creating, \u201ctoll\u00a0gates\u201d so as to extort the Customs agents.<\/p>\n
