{"id":8051,"date":"2016-08-06T12:44:01","date_gmt":"2016-08-06T11:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=8051"},"modified":"2016-08-06T12:44:01","modified_gmt":"2016-08-06T11:44:01","slug":"fg-sets-up-ministerial-council-on-industrial-sector-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/fg-sets-up-ministerial-council-on-industrial-sector-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"FG sets up ministerial council on industrial sector problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government has set up a Presidential Enabling Business\u00a0Environment Council committee to address bottlenecks affecting smooth\u00a0operations the Nigerian industrial sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr Okechukwu\u00a0Enalamah, who made this revelation stakeholder in Lagos, said it was\u00a0part of the Federal Government\u2019s efforts to address issues affecting\u00a0the economy generally, and industrialists particularly.<\/p>\n<p>He said the administration was genuinely interested in making life\u00a0better for Nigerians and did not want to engage in mere rhetoric, but\u00a0implement policies which would bring these about.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the ministry was also exploring partnership\u00a0opportunities with the private sector to make possible a harnessing of\u00a0all available opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Enelamah, who was joined at the event by some heads of parastatal\u00a0under the ministry, called for contribution from the stakeholders so\u00a0that the germane problems of the industrial sector would be tackled.<\/p>\n<p>He said the current government was not a passive one but a government\u00a0that is active in doing what it is supposed to do.<\/p>\n<p>In his words: \u201cWe are most interested in solving problems that can be\u00a0solved because if such roles are not played, the private sector would\u00a0be affected. So, the private sector is waiting for a government that\u00a0is proactive in solving problems for them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe want to be practical. We want to be able to help\u00a0operators, so we expect sincere contribution that would make this\u00a0possible\u201d, he urged.<\/p>\n<p>The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Aminu Aliyu Bisalla\u00a0who earlier addressed the gathering said the Federal Government was\u00a0attaching much importance to the sector in realization that without\u00a0industrialization the country would not be able to sustain a realistic\u00a0economic prosperity which would stimulate increased industrial\u00a0capacity utilization that would lead to job and wealth creation.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the government was aware of such problems as\u00a0infrastructural deficiencies such as power, transportation as well as\u00a0inability to access loans at single digit interest rates, dumping of\u00a0substandard products and low patronage of locally produced products\u00a0due to foreign products and other external shock.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThis government is desirous of addressing these numerous\u00a0challenges confronting the sector through its various initiatives and\u00a0programmes such as the implementation of Nigerian Industrial\u00a0Revolution Plan (NIRP), a harmonization of quality infrastructure and\u00a0certification, reforms in the power sector, reviewing that trade,\u00a0industrial and investment policies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said all such initiatives were geared to addressing challenges in\u00a0the sector and stimulating growth.<br \/>\nHe said these initiatives would not yield their expected dividend\u00a0without the support and commitment of the Organised Private Sector\u00a0(OPS).<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>He reiterated that the Federal Government would deepen the engagement\u00a0with private sector operators and manufacturers, adding that the\u00a0Ministry would soon roll out a Growth Plan for Industrialization andInvestment in the country. \u2018\u2019Let us make a commitment to work with the\u00a0government. We cannot afford to ignore the operators. This is why we\u00a0take this engagement very seriously\u2019\u2019, Dr. Enelamah said.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, the Acting Director General, Standards Organisation of\u00a0Nigeria (SON), Dr, Paul Angya said \u2018\u2019SON is a government service\u00a0industry. We are developing capacities for conformity assessment of\u00a0products. We will clean the environment of sub-standard products to\u00a0enable our local industries to thrive\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He said that SON was providing great incentive to MAN in the area of\u00a0SONCAP and factory monitoring to enhance products competiveness adding\u00a0that the organisation would carry out capacity building for MSEs\u00a0across the country to ensure their products meet standard stressing\u00a0that SMEs is catalyst for any nation\u2019s economy development.<\/p>\n<p>As for the President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Dr.\u00a0John Udemba Jacobs, the forum was timely in view of the challenges\u00a0especially recent monetary summersaults which further increased the\u00a0problems faced by the manufacturing sector. He disclosed that MAN has\u00a0been collaborating with the Raw Materials Development Council (RMDC)\u00a0for the development of local raw materials for industrial use, adding\u00a0that over-dependence on imported raw materials has been the bane of\u00a0manufacturers over the years.<\/p>\n<p>According to MAN boss, \u201cGovernment has a lot to do to make\u00a0resource-based industrialisation possible. When the economy wobbles,\u00a0government intervenes, that has been the practice all over the\u00a0world\u2019\u2019. \u00a0Jacob identified scarcity of foreign exchange (dollar) to procure raw\u00a0materials and industrial tools &amp; machines, lack of incentives, high\u00a0taxation, VAT, infrastructural deficit, among others, as the issues\u00a0that concern manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>To the President, National Association of Chambers of Commerce,\u00a0Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Chief Bassey Udom, growing\u00a0the economy is a task that must be done, adding that issues of job\u00a0creation, employment generation, export promotion as well as\u00a0industrial growth should not be handled with lip-service.
