Consistent with its commitment to providing an efficient and\u00a0sustainable capital market, the Nigerian Stock Exchange recently\u00a0organized the 3rd edition of the Nigerian Capital Market\u00a0Information Security Forum with the theme \u201cWhat to do when you are hacked\u201d.<\/p>\n

This biannual event provides a platform for stakeholders and thought\u00a0leaders in the information security space to share knowledge on\u00a0Information Security best practices and cyber breaches in Nigeria and\u00a0the world\u00a0at large. Some of the topics discussed at the forum include Security\u00a0in a Mobile-First Cloud-First World by Microsoft, What to Do When You\u00a0Get Hacked and Transforming Data Protection with Hewlett Packard\u00a0Enterprise.<\/p>\n

According to Executive Director, Market Operation Technology NSE,\u00a0 Mr.\u00a0Ade Bajomo, Executive Director, the forum is designed to deepen\u00a0awareness on information security, cyber threat and the crucial role\u00a0that\u00a0effective information security systems play in ensuring that firms\u00a0continue to provide reliable and secure services that endear customer\u00a0confidence and patronage, whilst leveraging technology to grow their\u00a0profitability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe incidence of hacking attacks are on the rise and the need to\u00a0secure and maintain information integrity has never been greater.\u00a0Businesses need to take proactive measures to prevent theft and misuse\u00a0of information, damage to intellectual property and loss of value as a\u00a0result of breaches. Capital market players must be up to speed with\u00a0the techniques employed by hackers as well as processes for adequate\u00a0business continuity and disaster recovery\u201d\u00a0Bajomo also counselled that \u201cto make hacking attacks less expensive,\u00a0business owners should constantly embark on staff training, introduce\u00a0right technology and processes as well as ensure round the clock IT\u00a0infrastructures system surveillance\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of the NSE, Mrs. Favour\u00a0Femi-Oyewole, who made a presentation on Information Classification\u00a0Guidelines for Effective and Secure Communications, noted that \u201cmany\u00a0organizations protect, manage and store their information the same way\u00a0regardless of its importance. Without classification everyone treats\u00a0the same piece of information differently, which could have major\u00a0consequences. From the time information is created until it is\u00a0destroyed, it should be labelled with a\u00a0classification designation to ensure it is protected, stored and\u00a0managed appropriately\u201d.<\/p>

Business Solutions Specialist, Microsoft Corporation Mrs. Blessing\u00a0Nnachi, in her presentation said that\u00a0\u201cthere is a constant tussle between innovation and security as every\u00a0business innovation exposes one to\u00a0more risks\u201d. She revealed that 160 million customers get compromised\u00a0daily, as it takes 229 days between infiltration of data and\u00a0detection, while businesses lose $3 million per breach, depending on\u00a0the location of\u00a0the business.<\/p>\n

Mr. Chuks Okpaka, Country Managing Director, Hewlett Packard\u00a0Enterprise, advised business owners to ensure that their data is\u00a0evenly protected and stored in easy retrieval formats through\u00a0formidable backups,\u00a0since 99.9 per cent of hacking centres on data.<\/p>\n
