Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN) has received information\u00a0from family members and other relatives of one Mr. David Okoro\u00a0concerning his alleged extrajudicial killing by the Police and attempt\u00a0to defame him in death by framing him with the allegation of\u00a0kidnapping in a cover -up bid.<\/p>\n

The victim\u2019s family members informed NOPRIN \u200ethat on the 12th June,\u00a02016 the victim, Mr. David Okoro, a well-known meat seller at Iheagwa\u00a0market in Owerri, lmo State, and who hails from Ahiazu Mbaise Local\u00a0Government Area of lmo State went for a burial ceremony at his\u00a0maternal home- Obosima in Owerri, lmo State.<\/p>\n

That the deceased was asked to supply meat worth eighty thousand naira\u00a0(N80, 000) which was used to cook food served to guests who attended\u00a0the burial ceremony at his maternal home.<\/p>\n

That after the burial, the deceased left, heading back to Iheagwa\u00a0market for his business and had with him the sum of eighty thousand\u00a0naira (N80,000) \u00a0paid to him for the meat he supplied, in addition to\u00a0other money he had before, all amounting to about two hundred thousand\u00a0naira (N200,000).<\/p>\n

That few minutes after he left on his motorcycle, and before he could\u00a0get back to Iheagwa market, information reached his family members\u00a0that David had been shot by the police.<\/p>\n

That his family members immediately ran to the scene where they saw\u00a0David’s lifeless body inside a Police Hilux Pickup with his motorcycle\u00a0inside the police van.<\/p>\n

That the family followed the police van as the police carried the body\u00a0to Asa village from where they ended up at Umuagwo Police Station.<\/p>\n

That the police officers, on realising that David\u2019s maternal uncle,\u00a0Anthony witnessed the incident resulting to David\u2019s death, arrested\u00a0and detained him with the purpose of intimidating him and other family\u00a0members not to seek accountability and justice for the murder of their\u00a0brother\/son.<\/p>

That the family strongly believes that the police cornered David and\u00a0killed him in order to collect the money they found on him and that\u00a0they (the police) then decided to cover their atrocious act by framing\u00a0David with a kidnapping allegation, threatening to go to his family\u00a0compound to demolish his family house.<\/p>\n

That the family states unequivocally that David was well-known in the\u00a0area where he resided, as well as in the market where he did business,\u00a0as a meat dealer, and had no record of involvement in any crime, let\u00a0alone, as heinous a crime as kidnapping.<\/p>\n

That the police have not presented any shred of evidence to\u00a0substantiate their afterthought allegation of kidnapping against a\u00a0responsible and innocent man.<\/p>\n

That two days after the police murdered David, his family members\u00a0including his maternal uncle who witness his killing and his aged,\u00a0traumatised and helpless father, Mr. Remigus Okoro, went to Umuagwo\u00a0police station where they saw his motorcycle still parked within the\u00a0station, and they lodged a formal complaint to DPO.<\/p>\n

That the DPO is defending his men on duty on the fateful day -12th June, 2016.<\/p>\n

That the family hereby calls on the Inspector General of Police to\u00a0order a prompt, impartial and exhaustive investigation into what they\u00a0believe to be brutal, extrajudicial killing of Mr. David by officers\u00a0at Umuagwo Police Station.<\/p>\n
