The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam has reiterated that the UNDP’s project on police reform aligns perfectly with the objectives of the Ministry, and they are determined to work hand in hand with the United Nations to achieve shared goals.<\/p>\n

He stated this during a courtesy visit by the UnitedNations Development Programme (UNDP) team led by the Resident Representative,My. Muhammed Yahaya to the Headquarters of the Ministry in Abuja.<\/p>\n

The Minister pointed out that the UNDP’s project on policereform is a significant initiative and the federal government is committed topromoting effective and accountable policing practices that uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of our citizens.<\/p>\n

The visit of the UNDP team has provided uswith valuable insights into the work that has been accomplished so far\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said it is encouragingto witness the progress made in enhancing the capabilities of our police force,fostering community engagement, and improving the overall professionalism ofour law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cIt is indeed a privilege to serve inthis capacity and work towards the noble goal of ensuring the safety andsecurity of our citizens. Undoubtedly, there is still much work to be done. Weare fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead, and we acknowledge the complexities associated with police reform.<\/p>\n

However, we are resolute in our commitment to bring about lasting change\u201d. \u00a0The Minister stressed.<\/p>\n

Gaidam stated that the prospects for strengthening working relationships with the United Nations Development Programme are indeed promisingadding that collaboration, coordination, and mutual respect will be the cornerstones of the partnership, as they strive to create a safer and more secure environment for all.<\/p>

The Minister added that the expertise and guidanceprovided by the organization are invaluable assets that will undoubtedly contribute to the success of overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way andcreating a police force that embodies the highest standards of professionalism,integrity, and respect for human rights.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Resident Representative of the United NationsDevelopment Programme (UNDP) Moh\u00e0mmed Yahaya stated that they were pleased bythe commitment of the Minister and the Nigerian Government towards policereform adding that UNDP remains committed to supporting this effort through partnership with the German Foreign Office.<\/p>\n

In his words, \u201cThis partnership with the Ministry ofPolice Affairs is a significant stride towards elevating policing standards,supporting greater accountability, and fostering deeper collaboration for effective policing\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said UNDP has expended $16 million overfour years to build nine police barracks in the North East states which werefully equipped, rehabilitation of training centre in Jos, and training 400trainers to train about 20,000 trainees in the Nigeria Police Force.<\/p>\n
