\u2026X-Rays Potential and untapped Opportunities<\/p>\n

The Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir\u00a0 Jamoh, has called for collaboration between the tourism and maritime sectors in Nigeria, stating that with the enormous resources inherent in the maritime sector, the tourism industry will be an easy and low hanging fruit for Nigeria\u2019s economic development agenda.<\/p>\n

Jamoh\u00a0stated this at the 6th National Tourism Transportation Summit and Expo\u00a0organised by\u00a0the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN), in collaboration with the Ministries of Transportation, Aviation, Information and Culture\u00a0at the International Conference Centre Abuja.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the topic, “Tourism and the\u00a0Development of Nigeria’s Blue Economy,” Dr\u00a0Jamoh\u00a0observed\u00a0that\u00a0 investment must not necessarily involve huge materials and human capital, noting that,\u00a0like other economic sectors, small and medium scale business was also possible to generate the amount of jobs and other economic benefits associated with the tourism sector.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Jamoh,\u00a0\u201cI must acknowledge here that tourism is one sector that Nigeria is doing very well. But unfortunately,\u00a0the\u00a0marine tourism component is one area where we are currently lagging\u00a0behind when compared to other economies of the world. I am fascinated, and must commend the organisers of this event, because a Well-managed tourism\u00a0sector\u00a0can support conservation while contributing to sustainable development and providing income opportunities and a higher quality of life\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking further,\u00a0Jamoh\u00a0correlated the relationship between NIMASA, maritime potential and the tourism sector, noting that maritime safety and security was sacrosanct for marine tourism development. He stressed that there was need for stakeholders to support all engagements and policies statement of government on preservation of Nigeria\u2019s biodiversity, maritime ecosystem and other endowments, which are valuable assets for marine tourism development.<\/p>

He also noted that the benefits from tourism\u00a0would\u00a0only be achieved with security\u00a0guarantees, suggesting that this couldbe achieved by closing gaps and linking\u00a0associated\u00a0cities through building of infrastructure, while the\u00a0bodies of\u00a0water between them are used for tourist attractions.<\/p>\n

“Research shows that the Oceans economy is\u00a0worth\u00a0about 20 trillion in dollars. These include the fishing, pharmaceutical and the renewable energy industries. Therefore, we have to develop, preserve and protect our maritime endowments and link these industries appropriately, to achieve the desired goal. As an Agency of government, NIMASA will always play that complementary role of supporting economic growth and development. We have invested a lot\u00a0in acquisition and deployment ofmaritime security assets, so I urge stakeholders in the maritime sector to take advantage of what we have done and invest\u00a0in relevant marine tourism areas\u00a0because our waters are now safe\u201d,\u00a0Jamoh\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0called for proactive measures,\u00a0stressing\u00a0that\u00a0Pollu tion of marine and freshwater resources,\u00a0Soil\u00a0and\u00a0land resources,\u00a0desertification and salinification due to excessive water use, overuse of fertilizers, erosion, air pollution, loss of cultural resources, and\u00a0social disruption\u00a0could be result of marine tourism development.<\/p>\n
