{"id":69430,"date":"2023-02-19T18:57:19","date_gmt":"2023-02-19T17:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=69430"},"modified":"2023-02-19T19:02:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-19T18:02:33","slug":"university-don-tasks-youths-on-promoting-agriculture-through-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/university-don-tasks-youths-on-promoting-agriculture-through-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"University Don Tasks Youths On Promoting Agriculture Through Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">Former Head of Agricultural Economics Department, Faculty of Agriculture, <a href=\"https:\/\/oauife.edu.ng\">Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), Ile-Ife<\/a>, Professor Adeolu Ayanwale, on Saturday charged Nigerian youths to promote agriculture through technology.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Ayanwale gave the charge in Ile-Ife at a workshop organised for rural farmers with the theme: \u201cScaling-up Lifelong Learning for Farmers (L3F) in Nigeria\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0The workshop was sponsored by the Commonwealth of Learning, in conjunction with OAU and <a href=\"https:\/\/armti.gov.ng\">Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute<\/a> (ARMTI).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cLearning is a continuous exercise and this will assist them to master the environment they are operating,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He noted that many of the youths \u201care out of school, dwelling in urban areas, mostly unemployed, but not interested in farming despite a lot of potential in the farm.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThere are a lot of potentials in using lifelong farming for farmers to ensure their inclusiveness. Youths and women can be included in agricultural programme of the government.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe can also improve their productivity, output per unit area, such that at the end of the day the main aim of sustainability development goals will be achieved,&#8221; he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He also advised farmers to take interest in lifelong learning, \u201cSo that at the end of the day, everyone will be highly benefitted.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Earlier, Prof. Adebayo Akinola, Head of Department of Agricultural Economics, OAU, said the programme was organised to bring together farmers, learning institutions and banks to facilitate learning for development in the rural area.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to him, the workshop will empower vulnerable farmers and their families on skills development, increase productivity, food security and educate agricultural communities on socio-economic constraints.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He assured the participants that lifelong learning for farmers would improve their incomes through quality produce and eradicate poverty in the rural area.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThis makes it an inevitable tool for rural community development and a means for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate hunger and poverty,\u201d Akinola said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Executive Director, ARMTI, Dr. Olufemi Oladunni, while delivering his lecture on \u2018Gender-responsive strategies for attainment of SDG\u2019, said that discrimination among the genders especially women farmers, should be avoided.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Oladunni, who was represented by Dr. Adeola Aremu, a faculty member, suggested that the same opportunity should be given to both genders so as to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He advocated for women involvement in the decision making in Gender-responsive strategies for the attainment of SDG.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Prof. Olanike Deji, Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, OAU, in his presentation on \u201cRole of institutions towards achieving the SDG of Food Security\u201d, urged government to work towards achieving food security.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to her, agriculture in Nigeria is subsistence, with majority of the work force at the small scale level where they cultivate crops for family purposes.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe three major workforce in agriculture that must be important target of every programme are: small scale family farmers, community rural women farmers and the youths.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThese three workforce are germane to achieve food security; they are major force in agriculture and agriculture value chain; they are the one that takes farm produce from level of production to the table of consumers.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThey are the majority of actors, but unfortunately, especially women are at the disadvantages end when it comes to access to resources, capacity building, recognition of their efforts, women are usually looked down upon,\u201d she expressed.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She also said that as part of efforts at achieving food security, rural women should be given significant attention and empowered to engage in farming.<\/div>\n<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Head of Agricultural Economics Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Adeolu Ayanwale, on Saturday charged Nigerian youths to promote agriculture through technology.
