The\u00a0Board\u00a0of\u00a0Directors\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0United\u00a0Bank for Africa Plc, Africa\u2019s Global Bank, today announces the appointment of Mrs. Abiola Bawuah, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO)\u00a0of UBA Africa.\u00a0Bawuah will also join the Group Board as an Executive Director, overseeing the Group\u2019s operations across the African continent, outside Nigeria.\u00a0UBA operates in 19 African countries beyond Nigeria, in addition to global operations in New York, London, Paris and the UAE.<\/p>\n

\"\"Bawuah,\u00a0a Ghanaian\u00a0national,\u00a0 is\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0female\u00a0CEO of UBA Africa.\u00a0\u00a0Her appointment further demonstrates UBA\u2019s commitment to diversity.\u00a0\u00a0The UBA Group Board now includes eight female Directors.<\/p>\n

Prior to her appointment, Bawuah was Regional CEO, West Africa, supervising the Group\u2019s operations in nine subsidiaries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. She previously held the role of CEO, UBA Ghana.<\/p>\n

Speaking\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0appointment,\u00a0the\u00a0Group\u00a0Board\u00a0Chairman\u00a0Mr Tony O. Elumelu said, \u201cAbiola has contributed significantly to the growth\u00a0of\u00a0UBA\u00a0Africa\u00a0for\u00a0close\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0decade.\u00a0\u00a0She brings a wealth of experience\u00a0in\u00a0commercial\u00a0banking,\u00a0and\u00a0stakeholder\u00a0engagement.\u00a0\u00a0It also gives me great pleasure\u00a0that\u00a0 with\u00a0her\u00a0appointment,\u00a0the\u00a0UBA Group Board has now become a majority female board.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0UBA\u00a0Group\u00a0also\u00a0announced\u00a0the\u00a0following\u00a0executive\u00a0roles:<\/p>\n

Chris Ofikulu becomes the Regional CEO, UBA West Africa.\u00a0\u00a0Ofikulu, who has over two decades\u00a0of\u00a0banking\u00a0 experience\u00a0spanning\u00a0corporate,\u00a0commercial, and retail banking.<\/p>\n

Uzoechina Molokwu will take on the role as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of UBA Ghana, subject to local regulatory approvals.\u00a0\u00a0He was previously the Executive Director, Business Development \u2013 UBA C\u00f4te d’Ivoire and has over 23 years banking experience.<\/p>

Ayokunle Olajubu will be the Managing Director\/CEO UBA Liberia, subject to local regulatory approvals. He currently drives compliance across Africa subsidiaries and comes with 30 years banking experience in Nigeria and other African countries, including Sierra Leone, Cote D\u2019Ivoire and the Gambia.<\/p>\n

Theresa Henshaw has been appointed as CEO of UBA UK, subject to local regulatory approvals. She was previously the DMD, Business Development, UBA America and joined the Group as ED, Business Development at UBA UK.<\/p>\n

Usman Isiaka, currently CEO, UBA Sierra Leone, will be the Deputy CEO in UBA America, subject to local regulatory approvals.<\/p>\n

Adeyemi Adeleke, the former CEO of UBA, UK is now the Group Treasurer.\u00a0\u00a0Adeleke will be working to unlock the immense value in the Group\u2019s multi-jurisdictional balance sheet, leveraging on its presence in 24 countries within and beyond Africa.<\/p>\n

In addition to the executive appointments, UBA has announced the retirement of High Chief Samuel Oni, an independent non-executive Director, from the Board following the expiration of his tenure.\u00a0\u00a0He joined the UBA Group in January 2015 and served on the Board of the Group for eight years.<\/p>\n
