{"id":63778,"date":"2022-08-17T20:46:38","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T19:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=63778"},"modified":"2022-08-17T21:01:42","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T20:01:42","slug":"salesians-of-don-bosco-drums-support-for-the-oratory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/salesians-of-don-bosco-drums-support-for-the-oratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Salesians of Don Bosco Drum Support for The Oratory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">***<\/span><em><strong><span class=\"s2\">Address S<\/span><span class=\"s2\">treet C<\/span><span class=\"s2\">hildren Phenomenon<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Failure of family units has been identified as a factor responsible for increasing number of street children in Nigeria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Director, Project officer of Don <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bosco<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Maximus Okoro, made the statement at a press conference to raise awareness for the movie<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">The <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Oratory, in Lagos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">The movie which premiered in Lagos, Abuja and other cities in Europe is a campaign for the rehabilitation of street children in cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">According to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Okoro<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">There are different factors behind <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the street children phenomenon, failed homes could just be an element of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">He added that, in some places children are accused of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">witchcraft<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and they take to the streets to avoid further punishments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe have also children who are being accused of witchcraft, we have children sold into slavery, human trafficking and the rest. Even within the families, we have family members who promise to take the children to the cities and offer them good opportunities. When they get to the cities they are maltreated and these children take to the streets,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cOne of the things we want the people to know is that the children deserve to be listened to, they deserve to be listened to, they deserve to be allowed to be children, if they don\u2019t see these things in the homes they go outside and when they get outside, they become drug peddlers, they are used for election violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe recommendation we always give is to have good family atmosphere and that is why our projects are a bit holistic, we have all the phases of preparation, when they come to us we rehabilitate them we also have to work with the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">families that is why it takes time we go to the families to study their conditions to educate the parents dialogue with them and when we see it is conducive for them to go back we begin the process of reintegration, the state government the court, and if we see it is \u00a0not so conducive to return them we keep them and that is why we do not rush to reintegrate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe have existing child protection <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centre<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in Ibadan and we have learnt a lot from that experience, it is not enough to say the child is doing well and we return them to the homes and they see the same condition and they run back to the streets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cSo, reintegration is an act that takes a lot of thinking, discernment, reflection, to know if that environment they are returning to is right, we need to even in some cases get foster parents that can take care of them from a distance, pay their fees and care for them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Earlier i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n his opening remark, convener of<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">he conference, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Mr. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Gbenga<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Adebija<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">said, \u201cThe Oratory is a globally acclaimed movie which has received rave reviews all over the world when it was premiered in places such as London, Turin, Venice as well as here in Lagos and Abuja.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Also at the event, Executive Producer of the movie, the Oratory and Don <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bosco<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Youth Delegate, Rev. Father Cyril <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ordia<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> said it costs the mission a lot to put the movie together and therefore needs enough collaboration to take the message to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIn <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">movie, The Oratory, we have an American actor, we have different locations and it takes a lot of money. People who believe we have to do something about street children must be involved. The Vatican news wrote about it, ther<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> have been press releases and interviews. People have contacted Don <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bosco<\/span><span class=\"s2\">about it as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">He also enlightened the audience about the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centre<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> the mission is putting in place to address strictly the issues of street children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThree priests have been appointed full time to be in the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centre<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> we are putting together. They will not be on parishes, that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centre<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is their parish to work with street children. It takes a lot to remove a child from the street. We have different categories of street children; those that are already smoking and others, the movie is a very strong social tool to highlight the situation of street children,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">He also talked about a proposed <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centre<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> similar to what the mission has in Zambia and Ghana for street children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThere is a structure in focus. We are going to have a youth village where we will have ten football pitches, huge dormitories, huge technical college, where you can gather around 1,000, to 2,000 children at a time. We have something like that in Zambia and Ghana where we have a lot of space to take in these children and where in two years they can be reintegrated. We are using the screening to generate more awareness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">I tell you the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">phenomenon<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of street children is <\/span><span class=\"s2\">different<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, we are not just interested in statistics because sometimes it is very difficult to quantify<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> what we are doing<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> but we know that we have indicators we <\/span><span class=\"s2\">can use to measure our success \u00a0and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">one of this is that at <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Salesian<\/span><span class=\"s2\">C<\/span><span class=\"s2\">hurch of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Don <\/span><span class=\"s2\">B<\/span><span class=\"s2\">osco<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> we have the need to have a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centre<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">for these children<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. T<\/span><span class=\"s2\">his time around we have decided to get a facility for these children and if you ask me what has changed<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> I will tell you there is a par<\/span><span class=\"s2\">a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">d<\/span><span class=\"s2\">i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">gm shift<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n <\/span><span class=\"s2\">ter<\/span><span class=\"s2\">m<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of inter<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\">st and commitment and there has been awareness<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cT<\/span><span class=\"s2\">he movi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">o<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t just <\/span><span class=\"s2\">for enter<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ta<\/span><span class=\"s2\">in<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ment but a tool for social awakening. An individual or <\/span><span class=\"s2\">organis<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ation<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">can<\/span><span class=\"s2\">not do it alone, we are still pa<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rtnering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> partner with <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the Lagos State government and we are fully registered with them, we partner with NAPTIP also. The <\/span><span class=\"s2\">phenomenon<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of street children <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is quite vas<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t, we partner with family social system and other <\/span><span class=\"s2\">orgnanisaton<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> as well to be able to achieve results,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ordia<\/span><span class=\"s2\">explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Rev. Fr. Linus <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Nkemjinaka<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is the Street Coordinator for Don <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bosco<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> who also shed lights into the operations of the mission<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Talking about what his department is doing, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Nkemjinaka<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> recalled that, \u201cOn<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> the 14<\/span><span class=\"s4\">th<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of April we created awa<\/span><span class=\"s2\">reness under the bridge at <\/span><span class=\"s2\">O<\/span><span class=\"s2\">shodi<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to campaign that children on the street deserve attention. A lot of children have been rehabilitated, the movie has raised a lot of awareness, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">it <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is not just for entertainment,<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Talking about the success of the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">organisation<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, \u00a0the<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> street coordinator stated that, \u201cF<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rom January to this moment we have reintegrated 15 children. Some of the chi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">l<\/span><span class=\"s2\">dren have been returned to the g<\/span><span class=\"s2\">overnment using the due process. I<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\">eds a longer period of time to reintegrate children that have stayed too long on the streets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">We have about 80 children we have reached out to, those that came from the streets and we are looking for how to empower <\/span><span class=\"s2\">them and<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> return them to school.
