{"id":63078,"date":"2022-07-28T15:01:48","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T14:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=63078"},"modified":"2022-07-28T23:22:31","modified_gmt":"2022-07-28T22:22:31","slug":"open-defecation-a-national-emergency-wateraid-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/open-defecation-a-national-emergency-wateraid-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Defecation A National Emergency\u2014WaterAid Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u2018A Gram Of Human Waste Contains Over 10&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>Million Viruses, Parasites\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Nanbam Michael is the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Project Manager on the Kimberly Clark <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Corporation p<\/span><span class=\"s2\">roject bei<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">g<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> facilitated by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wateraid.org\/us\/\"><span class=\"s2\">WaterAid<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\">, Nigeria.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">The project, titled \u2018Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Project,\u2019 is being piloted in two local councils of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ikorodu<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> North and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ojodu&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Local Council Development Areas, representing rural and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">peri<\/span><span class=\"s2\">-urban communities.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Michael,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s2\">who facilitated at a three-day<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">W<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ater and Sanitation Hygiene <\/span><span class=\"s2\">advocacy workshop<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in Lagos, recently, explained the project and how it is expected to be carried out.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">She is also alarmed at the high rate of open defecation <\/span><span class=\"s2\">in Nigeria, stating the dangers in the practice including the fact that a gram of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">feces <\/span><span class=\"s2\">contains millions of&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s2\">viruses, among other dangers and must not return to the homes.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">DAYO EMMANUEL talked with her. Excerpts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Can you explain what this project stands for and how it is to be implemented?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">The project is generally an improvement on sanitation and hygiene fo<\/span><span class=\"s2\">r vulnerable people in selected<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> councils of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ojodu<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ikorodu&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s2\">North LCDAs of Lagos State.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">I mentioned improvement because people know about hygiene and sanitation. What we would do is to strengthen community system, pregnant women, lactating mothers and community <\/span><span class=\"s2\">people and also school pupils especially girls and even the boys<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. So in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the communities we want to talk about <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the dangers of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">open <\/span><span class=\"s2\">defecation<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&nbsp;and for people to take responsibilities and handle the issues.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">We know that the Federal <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Government<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> has declared<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">WASH sector as an emergency and we know that Nigeria has a large number of people doing open <\/span><span class=\"s2\">defecation. T<\/span><span class=\"s2\">here are guidelines and activities put down by the Federal Government: the campaign to use the toilet that we are adapting by <\/span><span class=\"s2\">WaterAid<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in Lagos State wit<\/span><span class=\"s2\">h<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> the support of LASG ministry of environment, to review their policy about wash issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"> We&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s2\">can\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> talk about water without hygiene. They are interwoven. We are targeting women who will come for antenatal. We want to talk to them about <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the critical times to wash their hands after using the toilet, after cleaning their babies, which &nbsp;will reduce their chances of contracting water related diseases by 50 per cent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">In schools, we want to talk to children and teachers about hygiene, personal hygiene and menstrual hygiene. We want to break the barrier and it is not just taking care of the diseases. We want to tell them on how to take care of themselves, we want to talk about menstrual hygiene, we want to boost the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">confidence<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of the girls. The boys may be laughing at them when they are <\/span><span class=\"s2\">on&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> their period, they may not go to school as a result and there is tendency of dropping out.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">So we want to talk about the dangers of open <\/span><span class=\"s2\">defecation. I<\/span><span class=\"s2\">f everybody is maintaining hygiene<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&nbsp;and one person is not, the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">community is not safe. When there is open <\/span><span class=\"s2\">defecation<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, animals and insects take it back to the community and it is very important for the community to gather and take decision.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">A research has revealed that a gram of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">human waste<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> contains 10million viruses. That sam<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e gram carries 1,000 bacteria<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, 1,000 parasite seeds and 100 parasite eggs. So, just imagine what a heap of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">human dung <\/span><span class=\"s2\">can do! They can get dried and go straight to our water, our <\/span><span class=\"s2\">communities<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, go back to our homes and get us sick.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">So, this program is supporting L<\/span><span class=\"s2\">agos State Government <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to key into the F<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ederal <\/span><span class=\"s2\">G<\/span><span class=\"s2\">overnment\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s campaign<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">and also support the vulnerable people.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">This project will construct some facilities in schools and health <\/span><span class=\"s2\">centres.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&nbsp;It will also provide educational materials and reusable materials for <\/span><span class=\"s2\">girls in schools. This program is also going to strengthen institutions like the ministry of education. We are working with them, we are working with PHCs, CSOs and the media. We want to come together to make it a reality, we want to take action and develop a work plan on how to implement it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Can you give an o<\/span><span class=\"s2\">verview of the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">training<\/span><span class=\"s2\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">The Kimberly Clark Corporation project to be facilitated by <\/span><span class=\"s2\">WaterAid<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> wants everybody to be on board. This workshop is an advocacy and communication plan. We want to develop a plan with the media and the CSOs, we are talking about advocacy and action plan, we want t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">o<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> see how the media can advocate and make the government take <\/span><span class=\"s2\">action. We want to see how the CSO can support and advocate to the government. We want to see a situation where the media will go to these communities and come back later and see how they are improving, write about it a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">d tell the government what is happening so that Lagos State can take up and replicate what Kimberly Clark Corporation and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">WaterAid<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> are doing in the two LCDAs<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">that we are working in as a pilot. Not all covers what we are working on, the plan is to make it a pilot program and for the government to replicate it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Why <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Lagos<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> State for the pilot?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Lagos is large, the po<\/span><span class=\"s2\">pulation is large. L<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ag<\/span><span class=\"s2\">os is a very good environment w<\/span><span class=\"s2\">h<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\">re we can get the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">activities<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> on WASH because of the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">population. You will agree with me you may ha<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ve some facilities like toilets<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> but it is not enough because people are still doing open defecation.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">For some, it is the behavioral change<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&nbsp;they need. For some, it is l<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ack of facilities. So we want to be sure that everybody has access.
