Renowned environmentalist and member of the Environmental Rights Action\/Friends of the Earth Nigeria<\/a>, Rev. (Dr.) Nnimmo Bassey<\/a> has been honoured in Lagos.<\/p>\n

The honour came on the platform of a non-governmental organisation; the Centre for Children\u2019s Health Education Orientation and Protection<\/a> (CEE-HOPE),\u00a0 who yesterday named a hall in its facility after Bassey.<\/p>\n

Founder of CEE-HOPE, Betty Abah<\/a> at the event said, Nnimmo Bassey was her boss at the Environmental Rights Action, who after her service at the NGO remained a mentor and father.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I learnt from Nnimmo Bassey is advocacy. When people are oppressed, there is nobody to speak for them most time but once the oppressors know that someone like Nnimmo Bassey is around, they would mind how they carry out their oppression,\u201d Abah said at the event.<\/p>\n

\"NNIMMO\"<\/p>\n

Abah, who is the Executive Director of CEE-HOPE, narrated how supportive Bassey and his immediate family had been to her organisation and to humanity in general.<\/p>\n

\u201cNnimmo Bassey has always been with us through the thick and thin, he is so passionate about the work we do despite his very busy schedule,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Abah added that, \u201cNnimmo Bassey has been to Makoko where we work with the local people, he has supported the women, children and fishermen, they are ever grateful. So if we are honouring him today by naming a hall in our facility after him, it is not too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding, Bassey expressed appreciation for the great honour CEE-HOPE has bestowed on him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a very big pleasure for us to visit CEE-HOPE. The last time I was hare was 2017, I must thank the management, Board of Trustee for the great work being done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bassey added that, \u201cWe have many NGOs but CEE-HOPE stands out because they affect lives. The scope looks narrow, so it covers women and children but it actually covers all areas.<\/p>\n

\"Nnimmo<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are saying the truth, you are not afraid because you can\u2019t do anything about the truth and that is what is keeping CEE-HOPE, you stand for the helpless, the oppressed and that is why you see the success.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are never doubtful of what the organisation is doing, we find ourselves very comfortable to stand with people like CEE-HOPE because that is what we do as well. So on behalf of myself and my wife, I appreciate this colourful honour. It is a very good way to spend today here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A member of CEE-HOPE\u2019s Board of Trustees, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin commended the organisation on the shelter established for women suffering from domestic violence.<\/p>\n

According to Otufodunrin, a former editor at The Nation Newspaper<\/a> and Executive Director, Media Career Development Network<\/a>, \u201cIt is intriguing that with our population in Nigeria, we have just few shelters for women running away from domestic violence and abuse. The shelter run by CEE-HOPE is among the few shelters around the country and this is impressive,\u201d he said, appreciating Bassey for his support for the organisation, especially in his response to the slum dwellers and the needs at the shelter which was commissioned by him last year.<\/p>

Representing the Makoko community where CEE-HOPE has its biggest intervention, Prince Tobi on behalf of the Makoko people said, Dr. Nnimmo Bassey is a respected figure in Makoko.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at Makoko community thank him for all the support he has given us in Makoko. The work you did for the fishermen is still in our memory, we pray the Lord will help you in Jesus name,\u201d he prayed.<\/p>\n

Prince Tobi added that, \u201cIf we are bringing people from Makoko to this event today, this place will not contain us. So we are just saying thank you sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iya Amina is a representative of Monkey village, Opebi, Lagos where CEE-HOPE has another success story before a Taskforce from Lagos State demolished the shanties sheltering some poor people from across Nigeria. She appreciated CEE-HOPE, Nnimmo Bassey and other supporters for coming to their rescue when the Lagos State Taskforce demolished their homes on New Year eve of 2020 without prior notice.<\/p>\n
